Oatmeal: A Healthy Start to Your Day

Donna Daniels
Your family may not want to hear it but oatmeal is very good for you. When you eat oatmeal the enzymes in the oatmeal can actually grab onto a fat cell and help to flush the at out of your body. Oatmeal is a very old food that is commonly eaten for breakfast. It was served for breakfast often in the past as a hot cereal. Now people don't have to eat it in hot cereal form because it is found in many breakfast bars that you can buy at a grocery store. But you can also buy the hot cereal variety of oatmeal at a grocery store. You can buy it as an old fashioned oatmeal or you can buy it in the quick oatmeal variety. You can also buy an instant oatmeal but I don't find instant oatmeal to be any different then quick oatmeal. The old fashioned oatmeal takes a couple minutes longer to prepare then the quick oatmeal. The quick oatmeal has less of the enzymes that are good for you.

The hot oatmeal variety can be made in different ways. You can microwave the quick oatmeal or you can cook it on the stovetop. The old Fashioned oatmeal can be made on the stove top. You can add several ingredients to make your oatmeal taste different. You can add cinnamon, sugar, milk, raisons, salt and anything that would please your taste buds. It is best to add a tasty flavor to oatmeal since oatmeal can be a little bland by itself.

One of my favorite additions to oatmeal is apples. I just cut an apple up into very small pieces and add it to the water that I am going to make my oatmeal in. I put the apple into the water while the water is heating so the apple gets cooked. Then I add a tablespoon of cinnamon and a tablespoon of cardamom to the hot water before I put the oatmeal in. This makes a very tasty breakfast of oatmeal.

What ever way you prefer to eat your oatmeal is good for you. Oatmeal is best for you when you take the old fashioned type of oatmeal and eat it uncooked right from the package. It can be dry to eat it this way but you get the best health benefits from raw oatmeal. Oatmeal doesn't have to be just for breakfast anymore. Oatmeal can be good for lunch or even supper. Nothing beats the taste of oatmeal around a campfire with a good cup of coffee to go with it.
