Obama in Brazil

Carlos Rix
Brazilians admire America and the American people in many ways, but there is a lot of diplomacy to go on before we are really leveled. The American President visit to Brazil may bring some hope in that direction. Obama did confirm the good impressions Brazilians had.

As Obama first visits with his Brazilian college. "Rousseff takes a tough tone during their joint appearance in Brasilia (Capital of Brazil) and dwelled on issues that divide them like trade tariffs and Brazil's aspirations for a permanent U.N. Security Council seat -- a desire Obama expressed appreciation for but stopped short of endorsing." by Alister Bull and Matt Spetalnick - Routers.

Barack Obama, his wife Michelle Obama, the two daughters, the mother and the godmother of one of the girls, visited Cidade de Deus (City of God), this Sunday. He was welcomed by Rio de Janeiro state governor, Sergio Cabral. On arrival (11:20 a.m.) he greeted some children and was greeted in English by one of the students representing the community.

"We've seen the people of Libya take a courageous stand against a regime determined to brutalize its own citizens. Across the region, we have seen young people rise up -- " President Obama said later to an audience of about 2,000 Brazilians at Rio de Janeiro's municipal theater in a speech that was televised live in Brazil.

Both presidents are first in putting and end to a long male white dominance in politics in their respective countries. That is how far their similarities go politically speaking. President Dima Rousseff is from a time when she and her cammorades were persecuted for being left wing, which had everything to do with US policy to Latin America in the 60's and part of the 70's.

PT, Ms. Rousseff party, was divided. There were demonstrations in Rio against Obama's visit promoted by members of PT. As a country we have nothing to gain in not welcoming the American president. Ms. Rousseff followed the protocol and received the Obama's as demanded from her post. Did she forget the tortures, of course not.

One thing is true, Obama was very welcome by the people everywhere he went. Obama spoke of equality and sharing so both Brazil and USA may help each other. Hopefully this will start now, because Brazil imports from USA represent 40% of total importations of the country but the counter part is only of 1%.

Today it is very hard to understand Mr. Obama when he says his trip to region has among other objectives to generate jobs. What jobs is he talking about? Or better, for whom?

The opportunity is here, talking to people on the streets the feeling is of hope - very positive. Let's wait and see.
