Obama Celebrates His Win of the Healthcare Bill

Apparently He Cannot See the Bad Among the Good or is He Blind to It

Obama's said to be beaming over the passing of the Nation's new Healthcare Bill. I personally find the bill a bit confusing but feel it is a form of smoke screen and will surely be harmful to the elderly and others as time goes by. Here are some of the smoke screen areas of this bill:

1. Sate welfare systems are a combination of State and Federal money. The bill indicates that low-income families can apply and the base for acceptance will be 133% of the Federal Poverty Level. Unless you have had the pleasure of needing and applying for Welfare in your state then it would make sense most families don't realize that this is already the level for low-income families to obtain welfare in most States.

2. State welfare will be open to adults and not just for children. In the State of Oregon the welfare system is available for adults. Just last year they had an adult lottery and literally thousands of applications to cover adults with low incomes were accepted. Oregon also has FHIAP (Family Health Insurance Assistance Program) for the needy and this program covers children and adults on low income. Or even the Oregon Medical Insurance Pool (OMIP) this program is an insurance program for anyone who has been turned down for health insurance because of a pre-existing medical condition.

3. It will be mandatory for families to purchase and carry this healthcare program, if not the IRS may fine them. Interestingly those who cannot afford healthcare coverage will not take it out and what can the IRS do - fine them but come on Politicians if they cannot afford the premium then they will be unable to pay the fines.

Now to the real problem with this bill:

Medicare yep they state in the bill that there will be prescription assistance for Medicare recipients. Lets take a long look at this - first of all they indicate that we will see more and more elderly going back to the old Medicare instead of taking the insurance companies that offer Medicare coverage through them. Such as BCBS, Kaiser, Healthnet, and many other HMO type carriers. However, and this is the big one, Medicare recipients will see a marked raise in premiums and deductibles. That being said why in the world would giving them some help with prescriptions and that world celebrated doughnut hole in the prescription drug program make any difference to their pocket book.

Next - Medicare coverage does not include vision or dental for the elderly. Now many young adults don't realize but a pair of eyeglasses runs about $500.00 for bifocals and most elderly must wear these kinds of lenses. Dental coverage is important for the overall health of most adults. If they stop having dental check ups and cleanings this can lead to medical illness and infection. Not one of these politicians or President Obama even looked at these insurance issues for the elderly or for families for that matter.

Most insurance carriers allow a family to cover their adult children till 24 years of age that is a 2-year change not a 4-year change as they bragged. Also a family can cover an adult child attending college till that child graduates from college under most insurance policies.

Finally - ask yourself this question - How is this healthcare plan going to take the deficit down instead of up or keep it as it stands. Where is the money to lower the deficit coming from?" This is on major question that has never been answered for the public who is asking it.

If there are so many protesting this healthcare plan how can President Obama and the other politicians on Capital Hill make a statement that the Government of the United States has proven that we are a Government for the people, by the People and of the People. Keep in mind that We the People who were against this Healthcare Plan never did not have our questions answered clearly nor was our request of refusal ever considered when passing this Healthcare bill.

President Obama's celebration of this passing just shows that it was a clear game of politics at it's best, taking something and making a smoke screen of that item to win votes for the next election. When the polls show that the favorite is loosing ground then that favorite must make some kind of huge show to bring those polls up again. Sorry President Obama this will not make me vote for you in the next election either.

Pat exempt from premiums that is not what the bill says it states that they will be allowed to apply for premium assistance - that being said who pays that difference between what they can and cannot pay - yep you and me or at least I know me because my income is considered high enough that I should pay for all the others in the US to get this kind of health care. It is proven even here in Oregon - those on OHP (state insurance) still visit the ER instead of the doctors office. Sorry not enough of an incentive for me to feel the need to pay for other peoples healthcare and home bail out and every thing else that I worked so hard for to give to myself and my family that I feel I should pay their way also.

This bill is far from perfect. But predicting a rise in premiums is just that - an unproven prediction. They may well go up, but you can just say that it WILL happen, no one knows that for sure. The poorest families will be exempted from having to buy insurance. Also, the percentage of income you mention (133% of poverty level)I believe was raised, but I'm not sure, looking for sources. Finall, The poorest families will be exempted from having to buy insurance. I do believe in the long run it will save money by things like no more ER visits for minor ailments. And dental and vision were never a large part of any insurance policy. We can only sit back and see how this plays out.

It is indeed dubious on how the bill will reduce the federal deficit plan. The idea by Obama administration is that there are money currently being wasted by the government, and this bill will direct that "wasteful" money into an useful cost. While it is true that some money are being wasted, "how" we will convert this money into an useful cost is unclear, and as you can guess, such action will require budget, so there we have it: more costs unless they are compensated by the bill. As far as your article goes, CJ, while I agree with you in some ways and disagree on other areas, I think it is impossible for anyone to write an article that covers all the essential factors of the bill in just two pages of AC article. So, given that, well-done.

Sondra I am not saying that Medicare isn't good I am saying that this Healthcare bill is destine to take $200 billion dollars away from YOU the Medicare recipient in the next few years to help out the Healthcare Plan and that silly $250 bonus you got this year has to have taxes paid out of it so the balance after my sisters $165 in taxes didn't offset her drugs that cost $500 a month. You misunderstand what I am saying here I am saying YOU will loose some benefits real soon if this healthcare plan goes into affect and you will pay higher premiums and higher co-pays period.

    Interesting comments you have here.

Well written, but lacking in many truths. This article has information that seems to be the same information rumor spread by the Republicans who lost their fight. I have been on Medicare for many years now and I have not had any complaints about the medical care I have received. Medicare works. It does cover dental checkups and it does cover vision tests and also eyeglasses, although not those expensive designer ones. There is much to say but somehow your article is not leaning towards the good Medicare does and will do more as the time goes on. At least the Insurance companies will stop getting rich at the expense of the seniors and the donut hole will be closed and Medicare Advantage will not be giving out free YMCA memberships while Medicare itself does not. Why should some Seniors enjoy the exercise benefits and pay less, while Medicare recipients pay more and do not get free YMCA membership? There is much to discuss about this plan, but sorry to say your well written article is far

I am very confused about this health care bill.

  • Pauline Dolinski3/25/2010

This is a controversial issue, but the system is not working, and I'm for anything which makes a change. I am not happy with the insurance companies and drug companies running my health care decisions. As I traveled abroad, I envied many countries their systems. A step off where we are will at least get us moving.

Wow looks like a feisty little discussion board going on in your comments... I could join in, but I've debated about this too many times and it is impossible to sway anyone either way :)

    Well written article though!
