Obama Elected as President is a Historic Salute

Obama Being Elected as President, is Historic and a Salute to History

Historic

As I sat and watched Obama's victory speech, looking at all the people in the crowd cheer, and celebrate, I couldn't help but think how "historic" this event is for our country. Of course I couldn't even fathom how historic this was from being in shock myself. Obama has now etched his name in history along with all the other presidents of our country. Washington, Franklin, Lincoln, Grant, Kennedy, etc, ....and now history's pen will write "Obama." Whoever is elected as president will be named among an elite class, but the difference for Obama is that he is African American. It does not matter what color the president is, and for me I didn't care what color the president was; just as long as it was someone with a different agenda than the last 8yrs (Democrat). With that said, we know that our nation has a dark past regarding the unjust treatments of African American's before they were given their full rights as citizens. I can say that things are much better than what they use to be, however racism still exists, and being African American myself, I never thought that I would see an African American as president! This truly illustrates the written greatness and strength of the DOI (Declaration of Independence). The people have spoken and now history has been made!

The Salute

I have never in my lifetime* (born in 70's; margin of error 40yrs) seen so many people celebrate the election of a US president like we just witnessed. After seeing the different races of people, and even other countries celebrate our election I couldn't help but think of Dr. Martin Luther King and some of the words of his "I Have a Dream" speech. I thought to myself, "what would Dr. King think about Obama being elected as president?" I also thought how much Obama being elected was a salute to the sacrifice that Dr. King was willing to die for. Not just Dr. King alone, but the many countless other African American's such as Frederick Douglas and Octavios V. Catto who made sacrifices and paved the way for a better America. Obama being elected as president proves that their sacrifice was not in vain and this is a ultimate salute to those individuals of our nation, who gave their lives. I have always admired and appreciated these individuals but after actually seeing an African American elected as president, this made me appreciate their lives and my country even more. I hope as a nation we can continue to put aside our differences and come together as a country for a better tomorrow, and a better America.

God Bless America!
