Obama Gets a Lesson in Politically Correct

Kathleen Lynn
Did you watch Obama on Jay Leno? If you did you already know that he made a funny. Only maybe it wasn't so funny after all. He commented on his bowling score using the phrase, "it was like Special Olympics, or something." Then later made a funny about his kids getting a dog saying it was a campaign promise. The girls will get their dog but Washington was quick to put out a formal statement on the Special Olympic foul.

His remark wasn't meant to disparage the Special Olympics and he thinks it's a great program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities all over the world, the Washington spokesperson quickly told reporters.

The entire incident is insanely funny, sad, and horrible all at once. Obama is a younger man who appeals to a younger generation and thinks and speaks much like that generation. This would not be near the tornado it currently is if he were not oh, say, head of the country at the moment. If this line were used in a movie such as Rolemodels, the audience would laugh and never think anything about the actor delivering the line.

Except this is real life. And Obama chose to put himself in this spotlight. Let me shake the crystal ball, ah yes, I for-see a huge tornado off this one comment. There is going to be a huge outrage.

If you don't think there will be, take reality television stars. They are common people that get placed in an intense environment where their words and actions are recorded and aired nation wide. Let us pick up the show Big Brother out of the hat. In Britain, one of the competitor's lost their spot when they chose to use a certain racial slur that was derogatory. Even as a joke, the producers found nothing about the usage funny and sent her packing.

Then there was the winner in the US, Adam who worked with mentally handicapped people. Somewhere trying to fit in with his house mates, he thought it would be funny and get laughs to call them "retarded." One of the house mates jumped all over him for it. America went psycho. The company he worked for had to announce his termination to satisfy the outcry.

So will Obama get booted from the Special Olympic sponsor list? Not likely since he will have the bucks to buy back in, but he may pay for that joke with his wallet before it is all said and done.

Here's an interesting thought, most humans have at one time in their life made a joke that was not politically correct. The difference is that you weren't the president. But isn't the entire point of the president that they are human beings who will error? Is this just one more thing to poke the stick at in a whole pot of stick pointing that this man will endure for at least four years?

The next few days should prove to be interesting as more will be unveiled with the public reaction. Just wait until those who went to bed before Leno aired hear about the pun. Perhaps he should go back to reading those faulty tele prompters and letting his writers write the funny lines for him.
