Obama Ground Game Besting McCain Camp in North Carolina

Obama Campaign Out-Organizes, Out-Spends, Out-Rallies GOP Rival

Charles Willoughby
Greensboro, North Carolina -- North Carolina, a key battleground state in this year's presidential race and in determining which party will control the senate, has not elected a Democratic president since 1976 when the state voted for southern governor Jimmy Carter.

If the most recent polls are correct, this may be the year the state turns blue. The latest Democratic Public Policy Poll indicates that Sen. Barack Obama leads Sen. John McCain by 51 to 44 percent margin. The more conservative Civitis Institute Poll indicates a closer race with Obama leading 48 to 45 percent.

Most long-term political observers in the state believe the race is much closer than polls indicate. Obama has a stronger organization and is better financed than the McCain campaign. Obama television commercials her outnumber McCain by a two-to-one margin.

But in the next two weeks, the RNC and the McCain campaign are committing increased television ad dollars and, in recent days, each Obama campaign commercial, is followed by one of McCain's.

Obama also has a very strong support base. The Raleigh News and Observer polling indicates that 95 percent of the African-American population in the state is solidly behind Obama. With the African American population comprising 21.7 percent of the total population, that gives Obama a firm base on which to add a large contingent of life-long Democrats, who would vote Democratic regardless of the candidate. Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 52 to 48 percent.

An additional and not insignificant factor is found in the Obama popularity among young and college-aged students. The Obama organization has encouraged increased registration of college students. The voter registration group ACORN has been very active in signing up new voters among the 11 predominantly African American universities throughout the state. That adds an additional 28,580 voters to the state rolls.

New voter registration will play a key role in the state. Since January over 550,000 new voters have been registered, and according to a report in the Washington Post, Democratic registrations have exceeded Republican registrations by a 5-to-1 margin.

The Post reports that 543,000 people have already voted, 306,593 of whom were registered Democrats.

There is no let up in the Obama organization. It maintains 45 campaign offices spread over the state compared with 35 for McCain.

Just a few weeks earlier, McCain had a small lead in the polls here, but as the stock market crashed and the economy seemed on the brink of collapse. voters appear to have decided "change" is the only resolution. As Obama makes it a point to say at every campaign rally in the state: "We just can't afford eight more years of failed economic policies of the past."

North Carolina voters seem to be agreeing with that sentiment.

But, Sarah, unfortunately it looks like we may never get a chance to fulfill our wildest dream of someday having President Palin lead the free world. On the other hand Barack Obama isn't all that much, is he? He is merely an intelligent, articulate, and insightful 47 year old biracial man, a top of his class graduate of Harvard Law School and president of its Law Review, a former instructor in constitutional law for 12 years at the University of Chicago Law School, a 3 term Illinois State Senator and US Senator for the past 4 years, a Washington outsider with fresh ideas who wants to make significant changes in Washington. Come to think of it. Welcome Barack Obama!

    America's Next President

Good by George and Richard. We will certainly miss you both a great deal, given the deep understanding and sound judgment you demonstrated in committing our country to an invasion and a very expensive protracted war in Iraq. And many thanks also for keeping a close regulatory eye on Wall Street and our mortgage lending and banking system during your 8 year watch. Sorry Bill and Hillary. Of course we really wanted to have you back again so that Bill could have another shot at some more action with interns in the oval office; and we will certainly miss not being able to hear all the details of such encounters. Too bad John and Sarah. We will always be deeply grateful to you, John, for wisely putting the needs of our country above petty politics in choosing your running mate.

I see you all have not lost your fight :

GOOD! Because we have a lot to do. You! (the American people) are going to have to take back control of your elected government at every level, and set your government back on the right path of service to you, and the greater good of the World.

Barack Obama and the democrats are your best hope of doing that now. Tell your family, friends, and everyone you know to support them as best they can. Because the Bush McCain vote fraud, vote cheating, vote buying, vote manipulation machine is already hard at work to cheat you again. And we all know what a disaster that has been the past 8 years of Bush McCain.

Barack Obama and the democrats will need all the power you can give them at every level of government (Federal, State, County, and local City elected governments). Obama and the democrats will have an enormous mess to fix for the American people, and the rest of the World. A mess caused by the corrupt Bush McCain administration.

    You
