Obama, the Last Black President?

It is America's Misfortune that Obama Has Made the Election of Another Black Person Very Unlikely

Ray Rolstone
The election of Obama as the first black President of the United States of America was a historical moment. 145 years ago Negroes were still enslaved. Lincoln likely never conceived the notion that the Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1862 would lead to a black man becoming President of the United States. President Lincoln, although he did not approve of enslaving Negroes, did not think highly of the Negro race.

Obama was not the first black candidate for President, but he was the first to ever win the nomination of one of the two major political parties. It comes as no surprise that the first black candidate would come from the Democratic Party, but that almost was not the case. The Republican Party once approached General Colin Powell to run for the office. General Powell was a well-respected black Army officer and former Secretary of State, just to name one of his many political appointments. He had a great deal of political experience, unlike Obama. Unfortunately, Powell declined to run.

I did not vote for Obama. It was not because he was Black. He is a charismatic and compelling speaker, but he had questionable ties to individuals who seemed anti-American. There were so many other unanswered questions concerning Obama's background, but most of all, he lacked the experience to become President. His short time as Senator was insufficient to give him the insight and knowledge needed to run the most powerful country in the world. The American Voters obviously disagreed with me.

Obama's campaign promised, "change," and once elected, he delivered. Unfortunately, it was not the sort of "change" Americans were looking for. Never in the history of the United States has a President gone from such high marks of public approval and support, only to plummet to such lows. He has failed in so many areas of governing that one is hard pressed to find a positive note of any significant.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is Obama's latest failure. Ecologically, the oil spill is a devastating event, the significance of which we are yet to fully comprehend. Much like Obama's over zealous spending and mounting national debt, the impact of the oil spill will haunt the American economy for decades to come. We will not recover from either unscathed. Obama caused neither the economic depression nor the oil spill, but politically, he has failed the People in both incidents. It is a political tragedy for the Obama presidency.

Unlike some prominent talk show hosts, I was not interested in seeing Obama fail as a President. Even though I did not think Obama was presidential material, there are many other individuals of African heritage that are well qualified to hold the position. It is America's misfortune that Obama has made the election of another black man, or woman, very unlikely within the foreseeable future.

When he said "change," I was hoping that it meant more change in our pockets. But it's starting to look pretty gloomy. :(
