Obama Nobel Peace Prize for What? an Award Arguably Bizarre

Meg G.
Obama Nobel Peace Prize for what? Is the question that many people have been asking for the past day or so. The Obama Nobel Peace Prize was a welcomed surprise for many, and a shock to an equal number of people.

Obama has only been in office a few months, and has yet to accomplish much of anything. This is why many people are scratching their heads asking "Obama Nobel Peace Prize...for what?" today.

Now, if the Obama Nobel Peace Prize came after three years of better world relations, I guess I would understand it better. However, it is still okay to ask "Obama Nobel Peace Prize? For what?"

Many view the Obama Nobel Peace Prize as a political move, while others are happy for the President.

The Boston Globe answers the question "Obama Nobel Peace Prize? For What?" in a positive light:

Whether or not the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Obama prematurely, global awareness of the award can translate into a valuable American asset. Hard-headed leaders in Tehran, Moscow, or Pyongyang will not suddenly do Obama's bidding simply because he has been praised by a committee of dignitaries in Oslo. But this Peace Prize carries a message for those leaders and their publics. It says that instead of being outside an international consensus, the United States today stands at the center of that consensus. The announcement from Oslo has enhanced American soft power.

The Dallas Morning News takes a more negative spin on the Obama Nobel Peace Prize, stating:

"Though not being George W. Bush may cause impressionable Norwegians to flush with ardor, it is not an actual Nobel-worthy accomplishment. By awarding this celebrated prize to a president who hasn't had the time to achieve anything substantial on the world stage, the Nobel committee has demeaned the award's value, and put Obama in a difficult position.... As even skeptical liberal commentators said yesterday, this prize goes a long way toward bolstering the case that the adulation the president receives is more hype than reality."

What do I think? I think that the Obama Nobel Peace Prize wasn't meant to be controversial. I think that the Norwegian committee didn't mean to cause such a controversy with their choice in the award.

I think that the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to President Obama was supposed to be motivational. Although Obama has already accomplished amazing things even becoming the President, he should not become complacent in his new post.

Obama needs to work hard to ensure that America has an active role in world politics and that we stay a world political leader for generations to come.

The Nobel Peace Prize is Obama's motivation to do what is best for the world and for his country. Perhaps it will be what our leader needs to ensure he doesn't take the eye off the prize.

We wouldn't want him to become complacent now, would we?

When you ask yourself "Obama Nobel Peace Prize...for what?" how do you feel? Do you take a positive look at the award, or do you think that the president isn't worthy of such an honor?
