Obama Reverses America's Aid Policy on Abortion

Early Action on Abortion Aid Follows Footsteps of His Predecessors

On January 23, 2009, newly-inaugurated President Barack Obama took a stand on a woman's right to choose whether or not to have an abortion performed by reversing former president George W. Bush's policy of denying aid to foreign countries/United Nations programs that support a woman's right to choose, as reported by CNN.

In 1984, during Ronald Reagan's tenure, what is known as the "Mexico City policy" went into force, preventing America's funding of abortion and family-planning to other countries. One of Bill Clinton's first acts in office was to reverse this policy; George W. Bush's first act as president was to again reverse it, again denying the funds.

Pro-life supporters have already jumped on the band wagon, decrying Obama's campaign stand that he wished to reduce the number of abortions performed. In truth, his reversal of this policy may in fact reduce unwanted pregnancies altogether for some women, because the funding that had been denied in the past was not only denied for abortion, but for family-planning clinics who spoke about abortion in their options for women.

everyone who choses to have an abortion has one thing in common. They hada parent who did not. I think sterilization should be done at the same time except for dangers to the life of the mother or rape

I am very hopeful about Obama, so far he is making all the right moves by putting rationalism back into American politics.

Where does the government get off when they decide that our tax money that they collect is no longer ours and we have no say in where it should go? Not only it's going to planned parenthood, but also to foreign abortion clinics. I don't care if a woman want to kill her fetus, but I don't want pay for it.

    This is awfully short.
