Obama Sends 17,000 Additional Troops to Afghanistan

One Day Later, U.S. General Investigates Claims of Civilian Deaths at Hands of U.S.

President Obama announced on February 17 that 17,000 more troops will be deployed to Afghanistan in order to "meet urgent security needs". The deployment will consist of a Marine Expeditionary Brigade in the spring and an Army Stryker Brigade and other forces in the summer. These troops will join the 36,000 who are already there.

According to an official foreign policy statement on the White House website, President Obama and Vice President Biden "will refocus American resources on the greatest threat to our security -- the resurgence of al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan." The statement goes on to say this will be accomplished by increasing the number of troops in Afghanistan while 'pressing NATO allies' to do likewise, and by setting aside resources in order to aid in Afghanistan's economic development.

The Associated Press reports that one day after President Obama's announcement U.S. Brigadier General Michael Ryan was in the Gozara district in western Afghanistan investigating claims that eight civilians were killed in a U.S. airstrike. According to this same report, the deaths came after a recent U.S. - Afghan agreement that was designed to help eliminate civilian casualties by increasing Afghan troop involvement.

The official Homeland Security policy states that part of defeating worldwide terrorism includes focusing "on the right battlefield in Afghanistan". The big question now is how to determine just what that is. Considering the US-Afghan agreement and the civilian casualties that were supposed to be prevented by the agreement by using more Afghan troops, is sending in more U.S. troops the right call and the right battlefield?
