Obama Spending Freeze Trickery: Freeze Locks in 20% Department Budget Increases Over FY 09 and 10

Marc Schenker
Barack Obama is up to some spending "freeze" trickery when he claims that he will seek a freeze on a part of the budget for some domestic programs. In reality, the Obama "freeze" will actually lock in an already weighty, 20%, average increase for FY 09 and 10 in the budgets of departments that Obama claims will have their spending "frozen" for three years. These departments exclude the Pentagon, Homeland Security, and others which administer programs like Social Security. According to Charles Krauthammer who appeared on the O'Reilly Factor, what Obama wants to do is to deviously preserve massive increases in departments that Obama instituted last year under the guise of helping the economy rise out of the recession through massive government-spending increases.

This deviousness from Obama, under the guise of pretending to sell himself as a more moderate president all of a sudden concerned with even a small degree of fiscal conservatism, is particularly egregious when we consider that normal budget increases in departments are merely 3 or so percent. However, last year's whopping 20% spending increases were unwarrantably extreme, and to now sell his "freeze" as something that will guard against increasing deficits is just more of the same, business-as-usual chicanery from Obama.

Other examples in Obama's now-proven habit of deceit to persuade voters to support his policies include the whopper about how unemployment wouldn't go up past 8% if his "stimulus" went through; how he was listening to his commanders in Afghanistan despite waiting for months to send in reinforcements; and how his White House would be the most "transparent" in history (just tell that to C-Span, which wasn't even allowed to film his blasted, secret meetings with the pharmaceutical industry on healthcare "negotiations").

Krauthammer argues, convincingly, that Obama is humbled by the losses in NJ, VA and most recently MA due to mainly independent voters who shunned him and moved to the GOP side to protest his failure on fiscal responsibility. Thus, what better way to cynically try and lure those independents back than by pretending to be more fiscally conservative through this scam "freeze?!" The only problem is that Krauthammer and a large FNC audience are now on to him.

Another burdensome consequence of this "freeze" tactic of Obama's is how it establishes a new baseline in the budgets and spending for domestic programs. If the old standard, if you will, was merely a 3 or so percent, annual increase in the programs, then now, due to Obama's deceptive tactic of locking in monstrous spending increases because of last year's recession, the new baseline, if you will, will be 20% increases in department budgets!? Sounds outrageous, does it? Well, it is!!!

When asked by O'Reilly to comment on whether he was really saying Obama was engaging in all-out chicanery, Krauthammer hedged somewhat and cast Obama's motive instead as a president who was merely planning to get away with something that looks good, yet is not impacting the budget in a positive way. I think Krauthammer was splitting hairs here as that, to me, sounds like the very definition of chicanery.

One of the best stimulus ideas I read was this: Every tax payer should be given a $5,000 prepaid debit card from the gov't. It would only be good for 90 days, and could be used to buy anything the person wanted. The trickle up idea may have been better than the money being given to the banks, etc.
