Apparently, throwing a hissy fit when you do not get your way is a liberal thing. Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar threw hissy fits and walked out on an interview with Bill O'Reilly. Now, President Barack Obama is throwing hissy fits and walking out on America.
With government spending out of control and the nation's economy mired in one of the worst recessions of all time, it would be nice to know that our leaders are sitting down and trying to work out a solution. Unfortunately, they may have to do it without President Obama, who recently threw a fit and walked out of a meeting with Republicans after they insisted on cuts in spending and tax rates.
According to a report on Politico's web site, during a meeting on raising the debt ceiling with House Majority leader Eric Cantor, the President became upset that Republicans were insisting on substantial tax cuts or a cut in spending equal to the amount the debt ceiling would be raised. After hearing their proposal, Obama became angry, lectured Cantor, said he would take his case to the American people, and walked out of the meeting.
After the 2010 mid-term elections, President Obama promised more bipartisanship in Washington. "I am willing to compromise going forward," he told reporters on November 3, 2010, just one day after one of the worst election defeats Democrats had suffered in decades. Less than nine months later, he has already broken that promise.
For their part, Republicans were willing to compromise with Obama, offering several votes to raise the debt ceiling in increments to allow for some tax cuts or spending to take place, but Obama insisted in an "all-or-nothing" solution, threatening to veto any other plan that would not raise the debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion.
Let me say that again: Obama is not raising the debt ceiling TO $2.5 trillion dollars, but BY $2.5 trillion. With that much new spending, Republicans are pushing for cuts equal to that amount, but Obama is resisting. This resistance comes after a stimulus bill that gave, among other things, $25,000 to an anti-capitalism group to put on puppet shows and over $1 million for highway signs to tell taxpayers that their money was being spent (examples provided by Real News Blog). Yet, Obama insists there are no more cuts to be made.
Worse yet, Obama actually thinks he can convince the American people he is doing the right thing. Why else would he throw his fit and walk out on such an important meeting? Indeed, just two days later, he said the American people were "sold" on higher taxes to help the economy.
If the American people disagree with the President's plan, I'm sure he will just threaten to hold his breath until they come around.
