Obama Triggers Blackouts? Say What?

Carol Bengle Gilbert
While Prison Planet envisions conspiracies, the hype over President Obama triggering blackouts appears to be fanciful and the blackouts themselves over. The search phrase "Obama triggers blackouts" reached volcanic proportions on Google Trends Thursday after Texas spent much of Wednesday contending with rolling blackouts.

There were rolling blackouts to be sure, but the chief operator of the Texas Grid ERCOT, Trip Doggett, says they are complete. He attributed the blackouts to extremely cold and windy weather conditions that caused valves, pipes and other equipment in power plants to fail. More than 50 power plants that collectively produce 7,000 megawatts of power generation went offline yesterday. 4,000 megawatts worth are back in service.

A completely different explanation was published by Prison Planet, causing a spate of Internet searches on the phrase "Obama triggers blackouts." Prison Planet referred to the rolling blackouts as "planned blackouts" and called them "a direct consequence of the Obama administration's agenda to lay siege to the coal industry, launch a takeover of infrastructure under the contrived global warming scam, and help usher in the post-industrial collapse of America."

Alex Jones and Paul Joseph Watson published the Prison Planet article blaming Obama for triggering Wednesday's blackouts.

"The inability of power companies to meet demand is almost exclusively a consequence of the Obama administration's publicly stated goal to bankrupt the coal industry and in turn ram through the de-industrialization of America under the guise of the phony global warming mantra," they wrote.

As authority for their contention that Obama triggered the blackouts, they referenced the battle between Texas and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over a La Brisa Energy Center air permit. Texas granted the permit over the EPA's objections. The EPA wanted questions about the Center's emissions resolved before it is permitted to operate.

Despite the Texas permit issuance, La Brisa Energy Center will not be able to lawfully go into operation until it satisfies the EPA greenhouse gas requirements. That's because the EPA has assumed control of the permitting process after Texas refused to include greenhouse gases in its clean air regulations. Texas Gov. Rick Perry tried to block the EPA takeover in federal court back in December.

The Texas decision to implement rolling blackouts Wednesday was only the second time that the state's power authorities have used that authority by declaring a weather emergency. The blackouts left utility customers without heat or lights for about an hour. The last time the authority was exercised was 2006.

"Obama triggers blackouts" seems to be nothing more than the disgruntled rumbling of anti-Obama ideologues.

It seems really ridiculous that we would blame the President for power outages especially with the big storms sweeping across the country recently. I don't think it matters whether you like or dislike what the President is doing, blaming the Obama administration for power outages is just silly.

While many of your detractors are clearly showing their ignorance, they do have a very salient point. This isn't just Obama, but every previous President, R or D, doing the bidding of big business and world banks in spite of the consequences suffered by the Everyman. Hell, even Noam Chomsky made that perfectly clear in several of his well-researched books. The L/R-R/D paradigm is destroying us, as we're so busy fighting each other, nobody's paying attention to what's unfolding all around us (and the few who are paying attention are the object of ridicule and scors, unfortunately). All I can say is only time will tell who sees what's up and who's being had.

I'm fascinated by the poorly-written comments insulting the author of this article. Carol Gilbery is a brilliant and successful writer. If you can't write a coherent sentence, don't attack someone who has made a career out of her mastery of the English language.

It's interesting to note that 2010 saw more coal-fired power plants come online than any year since 1985 acording to a DOE report released in January.

If you see someone who looks stupid, do you expect them to say something intelligent. "Yahoo" news and carol, a match made in special ed class.

Are you people so void of being able to think for yourselves that you can't figure out that the search term is just there to get your attention to bring light to a much larger issue and problem that goes way beyond the left/right B.S.?!?!!

Is this country that stupid? You can't even figure that out? You're worried about some b.s. while our country is raped and plundered by a pack of power hungry mad men. Bush, Obama, Clinton, Gore...IT DOESNT MATTER! They're all globalist stooges!

  • Some of you people are lacking...2/4/2011

There is a much bigger picture at work here. The authors of the story are not just some anti obama right wingers. infowars etc was also very much critical of the Bush admin. as well...its funny when Bush was in power, infowars was labeled as liberal nuts...now its reversed.

People need to do some research on their own. This is an agenda of a small group of globalists/banking cartel. This is their own stated goal. The deeindustrialization of the west. These same people claiming to not want power plants etc then they invest heavily in more polluting plants in China, Mexico etc. Clintons, Bushes, etc...

They are creating a modern feudal system. Order through chaos.

The people just calling these things conspiracy are damned bafoons!!! READ! Take your head out of the TV news and do your own thinking!

Interesting write-up. We haven't had any blackouts here in SW Pennsylvania, but my daughter went without electricity for almost a week down in West Virginia.
