Obama Turned Me into Scrooge - Donations to Charity Are Out

From Giver to Scrooge in 1 Year

Sherry Tomfeld
As a Christian, white and conservative woman I have always been excited about giving and helping others. To give a little something to try and help out a neighbor or friend or someone I've read about that has fallen on hard times was always a priority. My husband and I don't give to big charity organizations, we like to stay local where we know the needs. Donations were a part of Christmas and a part of life for us. But thanks to Obama and his administration I can truly call myself a Scrooge. The sad part is, I'm not the only one.

Donations to charity are down and with good reason. Obama and his administration have morphed a lot of middle class people from giver to Scrooge. Taxes are on the rise. We have a small homestead that we live on and livestock. With new rules and regulations coming down the path, we will be lucky to afford to stay here.

Obama has shown me the errors of my ways. As a middle class family we always thanked God for having enough. And part of that thanks was giving to charity. We still thank God for what we have and know that charity may well have to start at home while Obama is in office. Am I Scrooge? Unfortunately I am. Who does it hurt? The very poor that Obama says he is helping.

I can see that raising our own food and sharing with others may have to grind to a halt thanks to Obama. With new regulations on what is taxed and regulated, we will consume the food ourselves. ( Scrooge in, giving out) Instead of going to the store and buying household stuff for someone who has lost everything, we will instead put that money towards taxes. (Scrooge in, giving out) Instead of building on to our tiny house we will continue to pinch pennies towards paying it off and paying taxes. (Scrooge in, giving out.) Giving a guy the chance to make money building it? (Scrooge in giving out)

I'm not the only who was giving to charity and is now Scrooge. Some estimates are that donations to charity are down some 14% and headed lower. There are 70% more people needing food pantry help than 2 years ago. Donations are down 23% over last year. Thanks Obama. You even showed us how to be a Scrooge. While Bush was foolish enough to pay 10% or better to charity from his earnings, you and Mrs. Obama only coughed up between 5.8 and 6.1%. ( and you were making more money).

Thanks for turning me into Scrooge. When the last of the middle class is on welfare and there is no one else to "take" from, I wonder Obama, where will the charity be? Who will the charity come from? Thanks for turning me into Scrooge and ruining not only my Christmas, but our way of life. Signed, Scrooge (wanna be giver)

My comment got cut short (without warning). Here's what got cut off: You are blaming Obama for your lack of generosity, and that is just simply wrong. It's your lack of faith in God that keeps you from giving. Not Obama.

Donations are down because people are just simply being selfish. Do you recall reading the following:

"Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood." (Mark 12:41-44 NKJV)

The difference between you and this woman is one of faith. While she gave from her heart, you give begrudgingly. She didn't complain about how poor she was, but exercised faith in God. Thus your circumstance is revealing that your heart isn't right with God. When you ought to continue to help others you are doing nothing but complaining instead. And worst of all, you are blaming Oba

So who's to blame. Lots of good comments. Is it the government's spending habits, the president's legislation, the fundraising efforts of the charities, the bad economy, the war, the system of capitalism? We all want to accuse someone else of greed, but we never want to admit that we might be the greedy ones... (not pointed toward you! just a general observation.) Of course, what you say makes sense, too. How can we spend or give away money that is needed to pay taxes?

I really haven't donated much this year, but it's b/c I'm not very happy with most charities right now. Last year or the year before, St. Jude's sent a letter that almost sounded threatening. I know that sounds crazy, but it had a karma's gonna get you if don't donate type of message. I'd rather hear how my donation helps and maybe why there is a need. There are two annual food drives that pick up food from residences. I put food out and they didn't pick it up.

Sad news, I warned about this in one of my pieces.

(con't) ...uggle. Too often now we look for someone to blame, someone to sling mud instead of getting our hands dirty and asking, "What can I do to help?"

I wish you and everyone Happy Holidays, and the hope that tomorrow, next year will be brighter for us all!

My first thought would be that donations are down because our country is in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression. Not only are donations down, but consumer spending as well. People don't have the money to give. And last time I checked, George Bush lowered taxes for the wealthy, not the middle class. If anything, we have him (among others, primarily those whose greed and selfishness have put us in this predicament) to blame as much as anyone. He was the first president to ever LOWER taxes during wartime. Does that make any sense? INCREASE spending and LOWER taxes? What else can Obama do? Taxes are the price we pay for a free society.

I applaud your generosity, but before we lump blame on a man who inherited the worst situation since FDR, let's all take a moment to reflect on the reasons we are in this mess. His job is not an easy one.

What saddens me most is the divisive nature of this country. We used to be a people who banded together during times of str

Good writing... I believe, though, that the change was not a personal one (for you or me) brought by the President, but one created by US ALL over 200 years of unregulated capitalism. All systems ultimately meet theri own end. Greed (avarice, if you will) is customarily the cause. Now, it is us.

Thanks for this excellent report! Have a great Christmas if I don't talk to you sooner...:)
