Obama Wins the Nomination

Bryan Belrad
At approximately 3 pm Eastern time, Sen. Barack Obama became the presumptive nominee for the Democrat Party for the office of President of the United States. Before the polls even closed on the final primaries, a surge of Super-delegate endorsements put him well over the 'magic' number 2,118 delegates needed to claim the nomination.

This evening, Sen. Hillary Clinton finally made her exit, conceding that Barack has an unbeatable majority, despite confusion earlier in the day concerning a report that she was, then was not, going to drop out of the race.

Both Senators Clinton and Obama have broken records in the longest, most active primary season in American history. Never before have all 50 states had the opportunity to cast ballots in a race where the late-comers still mattered. Both candidates racked up more votes than any other presidential contender ever before, in either a primary run or the general election.

Today, as the dust settles, even the most devoted among us has to recognize that the impossible has happened. A young, brash upstart from Chicago has taken down the Goliath of our time. The people have spoken, and Obama has proven both his mettle and his vision. And now, the real race begins.

May whatever God he believes in have mercy on John McCain.

This fall, America will have a choice between old-school politics, and the bright rising star of the future, a choice between fear and manipulation, or hope and motivation. Most of all, it will be a choice between Scotish and Irish: McCain v. O'bama!

Charlene Collins: "I think Obama is a great orator, but so was Hitler in his time.." The continued comparison of Obama to Hitler is idiotic lunacy unworthy of recognition or engagement. I'm still amazed by the large number of people who believe everything they receive through email or read on the Internet rather than the increasingly quaint concept of thinking for themselves. "I'm truly worried about out country being taken down to a third world country from the inside." Have you looked around lately and seen the damage done by George Bush and corporate greed? Near destruction of the middle class, economic upheavel, energy prices at records levels and still rising, huge escalation in unemployment numbers and the cost of everything, business closings, on and on. And you're really worried about Obama bringing America "down to a third world country from the inside."...give me a break.

Harry Dale Huffman: You conviently forgot to mention John McCain's courting (for purely political purposes) of John Hagee and Pat Robertson who believe that America's own citizens were responsible for both Hurricane Katrina and the 9/11 terrorist attack. McCain's "lack of character" here is glaring...not sure how you could have missed this. "just another liberal, third world reed bending in the political wind"...your racism is showing.

Ack! Shadow People! Xltay - what??? Why don't you accuse him of being a secret Taliban operative while you're at it? Or maybe bed-buddies with Osama bin Laden? Doesn't say the pledge... Where'd you get that, hearing Hannity second-hand? You're probably thinking about that FALSELY LABELED photo that ran around the Internet for a while. And not wearing a Chinese-made lead-based pin has nothing to do with believing in the *American* flag and what it stands for (By the way: neither McCain nor Romney wore pins at CPAC). To answer your question, we're from the part of America where we believe in thinking for ourselves. I can see how the 'death to dissenters' crowd might see that as "unAmerican", but there you have it.

Hm.....Have YOU forgotten that he doesn't say the Pledge of Allegiance? How can America elect a president who doesn't believe in the FLAG and everything that it stands for?? Betsy Ross worked mighty hard to make our symbol of FREEDOM and Obama has the gumption to disregard everything it stands for. I don't know where you Obama supporters are from but I am an AMERICAN, BORN AND BRED!!!!!!!!!

Fear not, Charlene - though Dems are traditionally less war-monger-y, they can and will mobilize our military if needed (FDR, Kennedy, even good ol' Bill). Just because they tend to have more restraint in starting a war than their right-wing counterparts does not mean that they will hesistate in the slightest to finish one. I think that the Hitler comparison doesn't really apply - just because Hitler had charisma does not mean everyone with charisma is like him. Also, Hitler was an ultra-right leader (the Nazi party was hyper-conservative, which is why Hitler never got on well with the uber-liberal communists under Stalin), whereas Barack is very much a philosophical leftist. Finally, Barack isn't telling us that all our problems are one group's fault, despite several easy shots he's had to pick on a scapegoat. I think he really believes in American unity, which pretty much makes him an anti-Hitler, if anything.

I think Obama is a great orator, but so was Hitler in his time.. both men were able to charm the masses and had wide support from the people. I'm truly worried about out country being taken down to a third world country from the inside. What will happen to us when he takes away our ability to defend ourselves against other nations that attack us? Scary thought to me.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating: the most important trait of Obama's is not his policies, but his leadership. He's no "politician", but a real leader, something this country is in dire need of. Where others say "get behind me", "do what I say and everything will be roses", or even "I'll do what you tell me to", Obama says "Together, WE can make this country great again." See the difference? Like Kennedy and King, he inspires all of us to become leaders in our own right, not just mere followers. He, more than anyone, can help us remember that we are all Americans, and America is all of us - not Red vs. Blue, Us vs Them, but Red, White, AND Blue, and all of us together. It's something we should have known all along, but, somehow, many of us have forgotten. Compared to that, his policies are almost unimportant.

Hm.. (be nice, Bryan) Ok, what working class concerns were dismissed? Are you talking about how he's said high energy costs are a top priority, how we should be dealing with the mortgage crisis rather than ignoring it, or how health care for every person in America is vital? And, I don't know that I'd call his membership with Trinity "politically self-serving", considering how it "politically" blew up. The man is not a moron - he had to see that coming. So, "politically self-serving"? No. And, for spine, *he's* the only nominee who wants to get back to hunting bin Laden -and he's standing up to even worse terrorists: the fear-mongers here in the US. Most of all, he's shown that he will not compromise his loyalty and his word for politics, as evidenced by his refusal to trash Rev. Wright. He has shown, time and again, that he will not hesitate to do what is right, and political BS be damned. How's that for character?

  • Harry Dale Huffman6/4/2008

This overlooks Obama's lack of character, as shown by his easy dismissal of working class concerns in unguarded statements and his 20-year, politically self-serving association with Trinity Church in Chicago. He has not shown any real spine, and would be just another liberal, third world reed bending in the political wind. I fear Nobody won last night.
