Obamacare - Doing the Devil's Work on the Lord's Day

Matthew Allen
It happened last night on Capitol Hill. The devil's work was done on the lord's day. The entire House of Representatives worked and debated tirelessly all weekend long. Finally, late Sunday night, the final votes were taken. The United States Congress passed President Obama's health care reform bill. Why do you think they worked so hard all weekend long? President Obama and House speaker Nancy Pelosi didn't want the Representatives going back to their districts during the Easter break without this bill being voted for. They didn't want the Congressmen and women to have to face their constituents. They knew that the American people were overwhelmingly against this health care reform bill. If the Representatives went back to their home states and personally heard and saw the opposition to this bill, they might change their minds on how they planned to vote. As a result, they were basically forced to work all weekend and late into Sunday night.

President Obama pushed this bill by going around the country doing campaign style speeches. He demonized the entire privatized health insurance industry saying that their profits and administrative costs are too high. Since when is it the role of the government to monitor the profits of private companies? It is the government that caused health care costs to go up in the first place by strictly regulating the health care and insurance industry. If they really wanted to lower health care costs, they should have deregulated and lifted certain restrictions placed on insurance providers. The biggest of these would have been to allow insurance companies to sell across state lines. This would have created more competition between insurance companies, resulting in lower costs.

The Democrats claim that this bill is going to save over 100 billion dollars over the next ten years. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the total cost of this health care bill is 940 billion dollars. You do the math. I am still struggling to figure out how this is a savings. I did some quick math in order to illustrate what the cost really looks like to the average family. There are approximately 300 million people living in the United States (legally). 940 billion dollars divided by 300 million people is $3133.33 per person. Say you are an average family with a husband, wife, and two children. The cost for your family would be approximately $12,000 over the next ten years. This works out to be $1,200 per year, or $100 per month. Keep in mind, this is just for the taxes that will need to be collected just to pay for this health care bill. This doesn't even include what you are still paying for your private health insurance.

Not to worry though. The all-caring Democratic party won't make average Americans pay for this. They will tax the evil rich people in the country. The rich should pay for everybody else's health insurance. They need to be punished for being successful. By doing this, the government will discourage Americans from even trying to be a great success. Why start a business with the hope of making a lot of money when you know that if you do, it will all be taken from you in the form of taxes. Your money will be legally stolen from you all in the name of helping somebody else. Whether you want to help them or not, you will be forced to fund every aspect of their lives. The welfare state of our country is becoming obscene. First Social Security, then Medicare, and now this. It was bad enough that we had to pay for the older population who didn't bother to save for their golden years. Now we are going to have to pay for the health care costs of everybody, including able bodied citizens who should be paying for their own. I am completely disgusted with the turn that this country has taken. I am deeply saddened to watch my country fall into Socialism right beneath my nose.

Walter -- What about huge corporations raping people of basic rights? What about Walmart who intentionally hires part-time with horrible or no benefits. What about manufactures who lay-off or terminate full-time employees and hire part time with no benefits. What about manufacturers moving production to Mexico. Who will stop this trend? Where will an average hardworking person get a job in 15 years? Will where my son, or yours for that matter work?

I wouldnt say every member of the House worked all weekend. Nancy Pelosi was unseen all day Sunday until late at night at the end of the final debate.
