Obama's First Days as President Meet with Citizen Approval

Gallup Poll of First Three Days in Office

L.L. Woodard
Americans do love their numbers and their surveys. If you've not had enough of pollsters and their numbers throughout the long presidential campaign, then this Gallup poll of over 1,500 people on their approval rating of the new president's first three days in office is for you.

As reported per the Associated Press (AP) on January 24, 2009, telephone interviews with nearly 1,600 adults Wednesday through Friday on how they felt about Barack Obama's first three days in office. With an error margin reported of plus or minus 3 percentage points, 68% of those polled approved of the president's actions; 12% disapproved and 21% had no opinion.

The AP article goes on to compare Obama's approval numbers with those of previous presidents', but the approval numbers from Obama's predecessors came after a few weeks into their terms.

It would seem that a survey taken so early into Obama's term-a mere three days-is premature and perfunctory. As an American citizen, I am less interested in the poll numbers than the actions and results that the new president and congress will be taking.

    We will see, good piece!

That's a pretty good rating, but it's early days. I'm optimistic for him, though.

I wonder if the numbers have changed since the passage of the stimulus bill.

I am glad about what he has done so far. But am praying for him. He has a long way to go because our country is in a bad shape.

I know we have to give him time, but I really am perplexed about some of his cabinet picks. Daschelle? Is he serious? What is the justification here?

I agree with Kofi. I voted for Obama because I actually believe that he is sincere. We have to give the man some time though. This country is pretty screwed up and he is only human. Great reporting.

I think that everybody wants this man to succeed.

Would be interested in how the question for the survey was actually worded, and how those that were polled actually were aware of any of the actions taken by Mr. Obama since he swore his oath of office, since a good 3/4's of the country now cannot find even Africa on a map.
