Obama's School Speech: Should Michael Steele Address Our Nation's Children Too?

GOP Chairman Should Be Given Equal Time with Our Nation's School Students

Carly Hart
This morning on America's Newsroom, a segment aired about Obama's School Speech, set for September 8. President Obama intends to address our nation's children at school in a speech specifically geared to them. This has raised the hackles of many conservatives, myself included, because school should be an environment free of politics. Furthermore, the Department of Education has created documents to guide teachers in their classroom discussions with children. These documents, available at DocStoc.com, suggest activities geared toward Pre-K through 6th graders, as well as for 7th through 12th graders.

If Obama is the head of his party then shouldn't Michael Steele be permitted to address our nation's youth as well?

Whether people want to admit it or not, Barack Obama is the head of his party, and, as such, Obama's school speech could be seen as some as a sneaky way to indoctrinate our school children. Liberals scoff at this notion, but to some parents, this is a real issue. Obama's school address is scheduled for the first day of school for many children in America, mine included. Parents, therefore, are not going to be given notice of the speech or be afforded the opportunity to opt their child out of watching it. Because of this, the blogosphere is ripe with blogging parents talking about boycotting school on September 8.

If Obama gets air time with our nation's youth, should Michael Steele, the head of the Republican party, be given equal air time to inspire our school children and ask them to things for him and our country? Michael Steele can certainly inspire our youth by asking them to listen to him and do things for him to better America. Liberals would surely denounce any notion of having the RNC Chair address our school children during class time and would scream about it being political too. But in the interest of being fair and balanced, shouldn't our children get some TV time with Michael Steele to hear the GOP's vision for America as it pertains to education to balance the discussion?

Release of transcript of Obama's School Speech could allay parental concerns

If President Obama would release a transcript of his speech, it would go a long way toward allaying parental concerns about the contents of his speech. As I read the study guide for President Obama's School Speech on Docstoc, I really wanted to know what Obama wanted to ask my child to do for him. Considering that the lesson plan starts out with a review questions such as "Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials... why is what they say important?" is it any wonder that conservative parents are concerned that what Obama asks our children to do may not comport with their own beliefs or teachings? The pre-speech suggested questions infer that it is wrong to not listen to the President or wrong not to do as he asks. As a parent, I resent that message being imparted to my child.

You sorry so called conservatives. How could you display so such disregard to the President of the United States. What shame me even more is having to defend your behavior to my forein friends. That freedom of speech bid is getting old. They laugh at our nation's short comings and it's fears. What insecuries you display. Find something real to oppose. This nation has spoken and love it or hate we have to grin and bare. Just like we have done in the past. But above all we must support this nation's leader. Regardless of who it may be. We are all still citizen of the United States. Remember September 11th we were ONE NATION UNDER GOD....

You have no problem with the President addressing school children as long as it is balanced by perspectives from the other side? You mean people opposed to education?!

If Barack Obama is the "head of his party" it is not presently his primary role. Carly Hart fails to note that Obama is the President of the United States. It is in that role that that he will be addressing these young American citizens.

People have been raising a number of bizarre objections to the leader of the nation addressing public school students. I truly feel that the Republican Party has lost its collective mind.

I recommend this video statement from Laura Bush.

Well Tracy, sorry to say, but you do sound like a bitter person in general. I hope you didn't deliver those two children just this year? Wait.... I might be sounding like the ignorant person that you are because he has only been in office what? Nine months!!! So, the only one to blame here is the previous elected officials. Not to mention, YOU! Why get pregnant a second time when you couldn't provide for the first child?!?!

Michael Steele might be head of the GOP but he is not the head of OUR country!!! It is OBAMA!!! There is no one other than the President that I would love addressing my child on how important an education really is...

OMG!! Is this really being discussed like it's an issue?? er

I have no problem with Obama being allowed to address school children, as long as it is balanced by perspective from the other sides.

I never thought I'd see the day when parents would demand a President of the United States be barred from addressing their children. Because our current President is of another party (and, in some cases, because he is of African descent), he is now being treated as, immoral, villainous, toxic and alien. It will surely not be lost on African-Americans that a new precedent is being set for our first African-American President. Speaking as a Democrat, I have never in my life dreamed of treating any Republican President like a drug pusher or sex offender simply for offering to speak to schoolchildren. It is the height of impudence that any President's remarks be "screened" by parent-ideologues of the other party, by tendentious teachers or school administrators. That any teacher, principal, school board, municipality or state should take part in this outrage is nothing less than a scandal. I rarely use this term, but there is no other term for it: is un-American.

Using your logic, Howard Dean should of had the same level of access to media outlets as President Bush. It is absurd to compare an appointed party chairman with the democratically ELECTED President of the United States. Please stop politicizing everything into Red vs Blue.

That's the thing Roy. The study guide is why conservatives are upset. They've since revised it to be more neutral. I don't think his speech per se is the problem, it is the teacher directed discussions designed by the Dept of Education with the help of the Obama administration. He doesn't have the "right" to speak to our kids either. As a parent, I have the "right" to remove my child from the classroom if I choose. No one has a "right" to my child but me. I think had he made it a family friendly event - something viewed at home with parents - it wouldn't have been taken so badly. But bypassing parents to speak to kids is wrong, I don't care who you are.
