Obama's White House Correspondents Association Dinner
WHCA Continue Charity and Honoring the Best in Political Press
Formed in 1914 to bridge the gap between journalists and politicians, the WHCA has been an organization that works to address concerns and challenges that affect journalists who cover White House related issues on a regular basis. The WHCA state that " It's modern role" in the conjunction between the press and politicians is "to champion inclusiveness in credentiating and mentoring future journalists." The Association completes this mission by raising and providing the funds to educate aspiring writers as well as address the issues that exist for White House press coverage reporters such as access, costs and scrutinizations. Along with raising funds for college scholarships the dinner has always been charity-based, specifically feeding those in dire need of food and care. This is an alignment of thought, correlating to the restoration of the caring people which has become a popular ideal in the Obama era encouraged by the President and First Lady.
Along with clever punchlines, Obama stated that in the first 100 Days, "We've enacted a major economic recovery package- we passed a budget. I've also reversed the ban on stem cell research, signed an expansion of the children's Health Insurance package." According to NPR. org the State Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act extends coverage to 4 million uninsured children, in addition to the 7 million children already enrolled in the program. This is an encouraging win for those of us who care about sustaining the lives of others no matter what because there is nothing funny or satirical about people dying.
The stance of the need for America to be a better America throughout the campaign and first 100 days is inspiring the entire world to do their part in giving, volunteering and taking personal accountability to advance humanity in whichever way we know how. Some of the people who advance humanity in their everyday lives are the political journalists that many of us honer, respect and admire. They consistently carry the torch of our dreams for the world with a high degree of responsibility in addressing political and social issues that contribute to informing, educating and inspiring audiences with their excellence in journalism. The pass on to many, the desire to produce selfless work that create change and represent diverse ideals showcasing humans in all their variations. A few of them were recognized for their excellence and achievement of upholding the highest standard of media professionalism at the WHCA dinner. The WHCA recognized the following amazing recipients: People magazine's David Greene, Michael Abramowitz of the Washington Post, Michael J Berens and Ken Armstrong of the Seattle Times, Gary Fields and Jonathan Kauffman of the Wall Street Journal .
In his speech, President Obama addressed the current hit that is affecting journalism and print media in its broadest spectrum. He addressed the economic struggle that is immensely impacting the industry that is changing with technology by saying that, "I offer you my support and I look forward to working with you and answering to you and the American people as we seek a more perfect union." He went on to state that, "this is a season of renewal and reinvention that is what government must learn to do...We count on you to help us make sense of a complex world." He also said, "When you are at your best then you help me be at my best."
Although they were not honored, journalists; Laura Ling {the sister of Lisa Ling} and Euna Lee are examples of the women who {as Amel Larrieux would say,} "put themselves on the line to save another another mother's child." There are so many beautiful people in print, media and television who are always at their best and it shows in their work. Sometimes our quest to save the world comes at a high risk and those who try should always be in our hearts for their commitment and desire to always continue. Ling and Lee are awaiting to be tried in court in North Korea. Keep your lighters up for hope and peace.
