Obesity in America: Why People Are Fat

Tara Deck
Our society spends million upon millions of dollars trying to figure out why we are an obese nation. All I can say is DUH. It's not complicated and there is no reason to waste all that money trying to figure it out.

Number one, people are fat because good nutritious food is expensive. Yep, that's right, we are not fat because we are rich but because we are poor. Take for example a bag of chips. You can buy delicious, finger-licking good, barbeque flavored potato chips for under two bucks. Unless you are a complete glutton, this one bag can last you a full week. Now lets look at nutritious food. Strawberries are more than two bucks a pint and will last one day, maybe two at the most.

Let's skip the snack food and think about food for meals. The entire census tells us that fish is very nutritious. Wonderful! Great information to have, too bad I can't afford it. I love salmon and fresh tuna, but how am I suppose to afford a piece of meat at eight bucks a pound? I can't and that's just the truth. I end up buying a pound of hamburger meat, fry it up nice and greasy, serve it with a nice side of those finger-licking chips, and I've got a meal.

Number two; people are fat because good exercise is expensive. I can't afford a gym membership, or two-hundred dollar exercise equipment, for goodness-sake, with the price of food I can't hardly waste the time it takes to exercise. And our poor children, do you know how much it costs to get into youth sports these days? Soccer, baseball, even karate, you blow half a fortune on the season and that's not to mention buying the uniform, cleats and protective gear. It's so much easier just to spend your money on cable and video games, instant entertainment that fits right into the monthly budget. Throw a bag of chips out there and the kids are good until you serve up the greasy hamburgers for the evening meal as the family watches the evening news.

Number three; people are fat because they are depressed. Why are they depressed? They are depressed because they are broke and fat and their kids are lazy, video game zombies that have no appreciation of hard work and good morals. They are depressed because their spouses spend too much time in front of the television eating potato chips instead of working on their relationships and raising the kids. They are depressed because they are too broke to afford a good marriage counselor, child therapist, or psychologist, so they go to the doctor where for less money, a little pill will make all that go away.

Except for one thing, that little pill makes you fat.
