Obesity and Fiber

Lose Weight Effectively with High Fiber Food

Lyn Vaccaro
Life Extension's article regarding obesity and fiber is among one of the most interesting in explaining how lack of fiber is linked to obesity. The mainstream media has given some high fiber foods that are very condusive to effective weight loss a bad name, and therefore many of those attempting to lose weight are actually more stagnant in doing so. Obesity and fiber, or lack thereof are more connected than most of us realize, as this Life Extension article shares with us.

Carbohydrates

How much have all of us heard about carbohydrates being the culprit in keeping effective weight loss at bay? What's important with weight loss and carbohydrate intake is not that you avoid carbs, but that you are careful in choosing the appropriate carbs that are helpful to weight loss instead of those that keep the weight on. Veggies and fruit are often times neglected by those that are trying to lose weight because of their carbohydrate content. However, these foods should be eaten for more successful weight loss due to the fiber included in them.

Fiber

In the article, it states that the American Heart Association recommends 30 grams or more of fiber daily. The bad news is that most of us don't even come close to that number, tallying in at a whopping 12-17 grams of fiber. That's unfortunate for those afflicted with obesity because fiber is a key player in the fight to burn fat and lose weight on a few different levels.

Fiber Before Meals

Consuming fiber before a main meal is a superb way to limit your food intake at regular mealtimes because it will satiate your appetite much sooner than without the fiber. That along with the fact that the fiber will decrease carbohydrate absorption in general. Especially the rapid type of carb absorption that occurs with simple carbohydrates that spike glycemic indexes. As a result, it will help to regulate blood sugar levels.

Whether you're trying to maintain a good weight for you, or losing weight is your goal, eating a diet rich in fiber can help you do both things effectively.
