Obscene Natural Born Killers Offends Most

Oliver Stone Masterpiece Natural Born Killers 8th Most Controversial Film Ever

Debbie Henthorn
Natural Born Killers was named the 8th most controversial movie ever by Entertainment Weekly. For many reasons, Natural Born Killers is also the most obscene movie ever made.

Natural Born Killers has something to offend just about everyone. If you don't like murder, violence, blood, vulgar language, gratuitous sex, rape, references to incest or media sensationalism, Natural Born Killers will assault every single one of those sensibilities.

The funny part about it is Natural Born Killers is a good movie. The original script, written by Quentin Tarentino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2), was almost unrecognizable after director Oliver Stone (JFK, Any Given Sunday)finished with rewrites. But, it is Stone's powerful filming style that makes this obscene film worth watching for the not-so-faint-of-heart.

Starring Woody Harrelson (Cheers, The People vs. Larry Flynt) and Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear) as serial killers Mickey & Mallory Knox, Natural Born Killers follows the modern-day Bonnie & Clyde through their brief killing frenzy and the media attention that follows. Mickey saves Mallory from her father's (Rodney Dangerfield) incestuous abuse in a black and white "I Love Lucy"-style flashback that includes canned laughter and the rampage begins.

Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man) is brilliant as shock-TV host Wayne Gale, expressing outrage over the Knox's crime yet gleefully counting the ratings. Another over-the-top performance is Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men) as prison warden McCluskey. Tom Sizemore (Wyatt Earp) hunts down Mickey and Mallory as the sadistic Jack Scagnetti.

The performances in Natural Born Killers are caricatures, but the real star of the film is the shooting style and editing. The movie shifts from color to black and white, mixes video with 16mm, Super 8 and news reels. The action appears in slow motion, freeze frame and fast motion. IMdB reports Natural Born Killers contains over 3000 "cuts"; the standard two-hour movie will contain approximately 600-700.

As obscene as Natural Born Killers would appear to the most sensible viewer, it is truly a great work of film.

Never wanted to see this movie, now I'm glad I didn't, even though I'm not easily offended.
