Observations at AC: Increase Page Views by Writing About What's Interesting

Picking Topics People Want to Read About

Erik Wesley
This article will likely not get loads of page views. In fact, if my previous experience is any indication, this article will likely top out at somewhere near 500 page views. Why is this?

The readership that is looking for this information is very limited. Sure, newbies on Associated Content will want to read much about how to increase their page views by writing what's interesting, but odds are that the majority of people searching on the internet are not looking for what is contained in this article.

Interesting Topics = Higher Page Views
While this isn't rocket science, it is important for people to note that the reason they may not be getting the page views that they are looking for is because their topics are not interesting to people searching on the Internet. Writing about Uncle Murphy's VHS collection will likely not draw page views, and what causes hair to grow, while interesting to some biologists, won't grab you thousands of page views.

How Do I Pick a Topic That Will Draw Page Views?
The answer is simple: if you care to know the information, someone else will probably want that same information. The topics that interest you, and interest others, will grab page views when SEO optimized and promoted.

As you go through your day, ask questions. What do you want to know? What are you curious about? In your search for page views, write down all the questions you ask in a day. A third of these will be interesting to others. Those are the articles that will net you page views.

Also, always look at your own searches as an indication of what you should write about. When you search Google, put your search query at the top of a blank Word document, and use that as the start of your next article. This will get you started towards drawing in higher page views.

Know How to Use Google Adwords' Keyword Tool to Increase Page Views
Not sure whether that topic which interests you will be good for increasing your page views? Head over to Google Adwords' Keyword Tool to check the search volume of a particular keyword.

The Keyword Tool will give you lots of ideas for other useful keywords, and will show you the amount of searches per month that Google averages for that particular keyword. Let this be your guide in determining whether this topic is a good match for your goals.

Know When Your Goals Should Include Page Views
Many people who are on Associated Content believe that they really want high page views, when their real reason for writing for Associated Content is to develop a community and write for a hobby. For those people, the goal is not page views (though the little extra income is nice).

Don't sweat the page views if you are at Associated Content for the community and the hobby of it all. If you are a serious content producer, develop your spider-sense for topics. The hobbyists should still improve, but should enjoy the Associated Content community without the looming cloud of lust for page views.

Wow...you write a lot here! I'll never keep up. It's funny, but some of the articles I think will get real high page views don't, and ones I don't think will, do. It all depends on how sensational you can make your title, I've often found.

Yes - it takes time to learn these things, too. I'm beginning to get a feel for it now.

I write to reach into the dusty realm of the human mind and sweep away the dead matter. But page views are a plus. :) Good article.
