First, figure out which subfield you want to study, and what you can afford, and then make a list of the institutions that offer them in your price range. Eliminate the diploma mills: for-profit "colleges" that offer degrees for upfront fees and little or no coursework. Also, ensure that each program enjoys the highest possible accreditation. Accreditation determines, among other things, how much financial aid you could potentially receive to finance your degree. For more about accreditation and diploma mills, visit the U.S. Department of Education.
Carefully review the structure of each program. Some are fully online; others are hybrid programs-a mixture of online and onsite courses. Hybrid programs are better suited to those looking to build a professional network, while fully online programs favor working professionals with busy schedules.
Research the reputation of each program. Check the program's website and other sources for outstanding alumni and faculty, admissions selectivity, and other indicators. Also, if you intend to become a practicing therapist or counselor, determine if the program meets your state's licensing requirements.
When applying, write a clear personal statement that expresses why you are interested in pursuing your masters degree in psychology at this time. Order your undergraduate transcripts and secure letters of recommendation well before the application deadline. Make sure to reserve adequate time to prepare for and take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), if it is an admission requirement. Find more information about the GRE at Educational Testing Service.
Upon acceptance, apply for financial aid; even if your income is too high for government grants, most scholarship applications require a completed financial aid form. Make sure that your computer can handle the technical requirements of the program, and that you have easy access to another in case your computer is damaged. Understand that online coursework is writing intensive. Classroom discussions often involve written responses to various topics, and written assignments are frequent.
When you earn your masters degree in psychology online, become a cheerleader for your program. Dedicated alumni are critical to a program's reputation and financial stability. Get involved in alumni activities. If there are none, start some.
