Dear Reader: What is Occupy Columbia? It is really hard to put into words. So let me draw from the wealth of information that I have found in one of our local newspapers, THE STATE. Also I have been following the events in our town on local television and of course the social media. Which would not have been possible with the late great Steve Jobs with respect to all the great internet brains out there inclusive of Steve Wozniak and Bill Gates and so on. From The State:
Our occupation started at 9 AM Saturday October 16th, 2011. I had been invited. But I definitely am one of the so-called 99% who pay the most taxes. Because my "Blue Collar' 9 to 5 trumped any kind of rallying I could have done at the initial meeting of occupy Columbia. And people here no me. I'd be one of the first to try to get a speech out to the crowd. That's me. But while I sat gridlocked wanting to participate. Many of my co-horts and many citizens from all walks of life were already on the move. From The State:when occupy Columbia first started it quickly was allied with another activist group the Columbia Chapter of MoveOn. That's when people started saying that they were the 99% (a reference to those people that pay the most taxes in our nation). Some protestors stood at the corner Main and Gervais streets in Columbia waving signs to motorists that were enscribed with "Give us our jobs back" and the message that seems pervasive all across the nation "Make Wall St. pay." Of course we all know that the biggest push to change the "fat cat" system and bring the banks and corporate entities under control. Is coming from "Occupy Wall Street" which led the charge in expressing how "pissed off" the majority of us are. That really rich people were bailed out of bankruptcy, defaults and helplessness and hopelessness. After they screwed up our country and made people lose their homes and livelihood. And instead of turning around and putting it back into the hands of main streert and main stream America. They quit or were fired and were given money to retire in everlasting bliss. Leaving the rest of us to struggle along. While they changed all the banking rules, mortgage rules and so on. And they have the audacity to complain they did not get enough. Now I have not had a chance to participate in "Occupy Columbia" but I plan to. I go the radio and express in social media on twitter, facebook and the like. And of course now in AC.com I say this that and no offense to anyone. I have been there and speak from my experience. You can be poor or be rich. Which is better. But if you do the wrong thing like the "fat Cats" who were bailed out by President Obama (no offense Mr. President) and were given money to keep them comfortable. Or if your poor and you let that push you to do the worse things to others. Then that's what I'm going to rally against. Now don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with being rich. As long as you do the right thing. Bill Gates does right and so did Steve Jobs but Rupert Murdoch is doing wrong so are The Koch Brothers and others. And you can actually be poor and do the right thing ...knowing in the back of your mind. Anyone can fall into poverty from a Wall Street trader to plumber. And they could have been making very good money. That is what the haves do not think about until the worse case scenario comes knocking at their door. Then they want main street to help them because their "fat Cat" Wall Street friends have all but fforgotten about them. So in my opinion that's what the "Occupy" Nation is about and that's what "Occupy Columbia" in my opinion is about. It's about people doing the right thing no matter what situation you are in. Ideally we all want to have money and live comfortable. Maybe not rich. But no one wants to be poor not even we that are poor and those of us that have been poor. Perhaps this movement will correct somethings and that will be the catalyst to start change for the better for the rich and for the poor.
