Occupy Wall Street Gets the Boot for a Bit
I always figured it would come to something like this. Just a couple of days before Occupy Wall Street could claim their occupation had grown to two months old, Occupy Wall Street are being given the heave-ho as I write this.
Apparently around 10:45 pm on Monday night, November 14, police lined up beneath the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges; mere blocks from Occupy Wall Street's main hangout in Zuccotti Park. NYPD called the assemblage a "drill" but Twitter got straight to work warning people that the NYPD were on their way.
Steven Polakoff wrote " I'm worried #OWS on eviction watch and 100's of police are all geared up a few streets away #WTF #Occupy Get the camera's out "
Hummanity Find Love wrote " We are getting raided it seems nyc #ows "
Mellow Yellow felt the pinch " Can some #BikeNYC go2 South St 2 verify #rumor of 500+ #NYPD in #riot gear? Verify plz! #OWS stay calm, but hit me up if its going down! "
According to NBC News "Police handed out letters to protesters ordering them to temporally evacuate the park. Police said the eviction will improve health conditions...Campers were ordered to remove all their tents. Police claimed it was a health issue." The protesters will apparently be allowed to return to the park "in several hours...but without their property which will be brought to a sanitation garage."
Occupy Wall Street may be remembered as the first addendum to our First Amendment rights because one day, after all this nonsense is over, you can bet that the Supreme Court will add some little asterisk to the Bill of Rights which will say something like "you can assemble but you can't Occupy."
Occupy Wall Street has also raised the ire of residents who say they want them out. If only the residents of Lower Manhattan could Occupy the Occupation. I just don't think that residents of Lower Manhattan would be able to stay for too long in that rank smelling funk.
What will come of this Occupy raid? I guess we will just have to wait and see. Somehow I see a whole lot of uniformed officers in bullet proof vests occupy Zuccotti Park in the coming days.
As of 10:30 am on Tuesday, Occupy Wall Street were allowed to return to their encampment in Zuccotti Park.
