Ocean City, Maryland Travel Guide

Ocean City, Maryland is a hot spot of tourism during the Summer season. It's aflutter with activities such as fishing competitions, car shows, outdoor movies, music, and tons of other activities both adults and families. I have been enjoying the town of Ocean City, Maryland since I was a child, and it is still a place my family and I love to visit.

The boardwalk is one of the best features of OCMD. Its 2.5 miles long and many people spend their days on the boardwalk eating at the restaurants, shopping, or just enjoying exercise. Biking is allowed on the boardwalk during certain hours, and there is also a tram service on the boardwalk. The boardwalk leads out to the shoreline, and there are bathroom, showers, and changing facilities throughout the boardwalk that are open for public use. Best part? The beaches here are lifeguard patrolled, and free.

There are many different restaurants and hotels available. By far the best place to eat in Ocean City is on the bay side of the Route 50 bridge. Hooper's Crab House is legendary for their fresh seafood, and cool atmosphere, despite being a resurrection of the burnt down building that was previously located there. If you're in the search for ice cream, you cannot forget Dumser's Dairyland.

You can save money by staying in an efficiency apartment rental, or a "mom and pop" hotel, many of which are located right on, or just a block away, from the boardwalk. Big name hotel chains are located in OCMD, but you will pay for their name. The hospitality and amenities are just as nice at other low key hotels, but be sure to read ratings online before booking.

Public transportation is available in OCMD, with a great bus service. I recommend parking your vehicle in one spot for the time you are there if you plan to stay strictly in OCMD. Rent a scooter, bring a bicycle, or make use of the convenient bus services. Parking is quite limited.

There are many stores throughout the boardwalk, and along the main parkways selling beachwear, as well as knick knacks and traditional tourist items. However, there are some local places that sell quality items. Make sure to purchase things away from the boardwalk, as you will often find a better deal, and greater quality. There are also many outlets surrounding Ocean City which will provide you with shopping for all your name brand labels at great deals

The nightlife in OCMD is excellent, featuring Secrets and other great hotspots for the over 21 crowd. OCMD is far from a dry town, so beware of the college drunks, and the police patrolling the roads to keep everyone safe. Be smart and use public transportation or a designated driver when you visit the many bars and nightclubs in this beach town.

Nearby to OCMD, is Assateague Island, home to the wild horses. This is a great day journey for families to explore wildlife, and they also feature an amazing beach. A 7-day entrance fee is $15.00 per vehicle.

Don't forget to visit local beach communities such as Lewes, Bethany, and Rehoboth, all of which offer their own eclectic beach styles. Ocean City, Maryland is a great place for singles, couples, and families. Book ahead, as hotels tend to fill up fast in the summer season. Also consider local campgrounds such as Frontier and Pocomoke River. Off season rates are often worth the price decrease, but you do risk businesses being closed in the off season.
