Ocean Spray Cranberries Leaves New Jersey

The Painful Truth About Cap and Trade

Lorraine Yapps Cohen
New Jersey lost Ocean Spray. The cranberry company is moving its long standing Bordentown operations to Pennsylvania. Why? Cap-and-trade tax made it too expensive to do business in the Garden State.

Cap and tax = punishment for business
Recall, Gov. Chris Chistie recently removed New Jersey from the punitive tax treatments businesses endured as a member of "Reggie" (RGGI, Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative). But it wasn't before it was already too late for Ocean Spray. The company is moving its operations to Pennsylvania, a state paying no mind toward any carbon taxing scheme, nevermind that reducing emissions has no effect on the climate.

Cap and tax = economic decline
Former NJ Gov. Corzine (D) signed on to the hopeful hoax that "Reggie" was. Current NJ Gov. Christie cares more about the current dire economy in New Jersey than any as-yet-unseen dire consequences for climate. Cap-and-tax cost Christie's New Jersey more than $100 million, paid for by families and businesses passed on to them from cap-and-trade tax on energy producers and power plants.

Cap and tax = rising energy cost
Christie withdrew New Jersey from Reggie having observed no "green" jobs boom, as promised, as well. He could see through that hoax from the get-go. A Republican, Christie sees value as written on the bottom line. Uneconomic sources for future energy supply simply doesn't compete with current energy available today at lower cost. Unless, of course, you tax the pants off the current energy supply.

Cap and tax = business exodus
So Ocean Spray pulled up stakes, ridding itself of punitive taxes just to conduct business. Spokesman for the company, John Osaf, says "operating in Pennsylvania will save about $15 million a year mostly in lower utility and transportation costs, taxes, and other operating expenses." New Jersey will lose 250 Ocean Spray jobs.

Cap and tax = going to pot
Oh, that's not so bad, you say. But the move joins other business exodus moving out of cap-and-trade states. The business migration from California to Texas comes to mind. Not wanting to lose their jobs and business, Utah and Arizona smartly banned cap and trade. Seeing New Jersey's example, New Hampshire wants to opt out of Reggie. But Democrat governors a la John Lynch (New Hampshire) and Jerry Brown (California) would rather see their states go to pot rather than leave business alone.

Oh, what are they thinking?

Somebody please enlighten Democrat state regimes that cap and trade causes economic decline.

If you are a Democrat in a cap and trade state, know that your vote sends jobs out of state.

If you are a business operating in a cap-and-trade state, start packing.

If you live in a cap-and-trade state, open your wallet even wider.

If you are a citizen anywhere in America, realize that cap and trade anywhere hurts everybody everywhere. Economic decline starts with you if you think it's not so.

Great report Lorraine. I tell you, "Stupid" continues to mutate and populate. Cap and trade is a thief-in-the-night to the economy. Keep up the good work. Michael
