Ocean Spray Offers Reward for the "Ultimate Cranberry Recipe"

Does Your Recipe Have What it Takes to Win $25,000 from Ocean Spray?

Maria Giorgio
The holiday season is the most popular time to eat cranberries, but Ocean Spray is out to change that. It wants consumers to know that the cranberry has something to offer all year long. To prove it, Ocean Spray is hosting its first "Ultimate Cranberry Recipe Contest." From July 12 to August 23, cooks across the country can enter the contest online at www.oceanspray.com.

According to Ocean Spray, recipe submissions must be original and include at least one-half cup (solid measure) or 1.5 ounces (liquid measure) of any Ocean Spray cranberry product. The contest has six categories:
Beverages
Snacks and Appetizers
Salads
Main Dishes
Side Dishes
Desserts and Baked Goods

From the entries, four semi-finalists will be selected to travel to New York for a final presentation. One of them will win $25,000.

The Ocean Spray name has been synonymous with cranberries since the company started in 1930. Its first product, Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail, is still a best selling grocery item. Ocean Spray broke new ground with its creation of Cran Apple Cranberry Apple Juice Drink in 1976. Since then, Ocean Spray has created other cranberry and fruit juice blends, canned cranberry sauces, fresh cranberries, and several varieties of Craisins Sweetened Dried Cranberries.

At the Ocean Spray website, you can keep up with the latest discoveries about the health benefits of the cranberry, as well as late-breaking news. Scientists have known for years that the proanthocyanidin (PAC) and antioxidant properties of cranberries contribute to good health. Now they have another reason to promote the cranberry. Ocean Spray reported a remarkable discovery by a researcher at the University of Maine.

Dr. Vivian Chi Hua Wu found that cranberries may help in the fight against food poisoning by reducing the growth of bacteria, such as Salmonella and E. coli. This finding may lead to a significant change in the way the nation's food is processed and preserved.

As you see, there are plenty of reasons to eat cranberries, and Ocean Spray is eager to spread the word. This contest may help to give the cranberry the respect it deserves. To get you started on the cranberry craze, here is a recipe from Ocean Spray to help keep you cool on those hot summer days:

Raspberry Cranberry Lemon Berry Squeeze
Ingredients:
6 ounces Ocean Spray Light Cran Raspberry Raspberry Cranberry Juice Drink
A squeeze of lemon juice (about 1 teaspoon)
6 ounces club soda
Lemon twist, Garnish

Directions:
Combine raspberry cranberry juice drink and lemon juice in a tall glass with ice. Top with club soda, stir gently. Garnish with a twist of lemon. Makes 1 serving.

Now that you are refreshed, don your chef's hat and get to work creating the winning recipe. Let us know if your recipe is one selected to be featured by Ocean Spray, or if you are the grand-prize winner! Good luck!

I love cranberries. Both my daughter (10) and I each have a few recipes with cranberries. I'll have to see if she's old enough to enter. That'd be so cute and a good prize to put up for college. If she can't enter, I just might. Thanks for sharing. :-)
