Looking for a day of relaxation and fun in the sand, or even a nice place for an evening out in North County San Diego? Look no farther than the beach in Oceanside, California. There is something to do at the beach in Oceanside for everyone, no matter the age.

During the summer the average water temperature is between 68 and 74 degrees. Combined with average summer surf of four to seven feet Oceanside beach (formally known as Pier View South and Pier View North) is home to many surfers. Surfing, body boarding and body surfing events are held each year. The waves are best on the south side of the pier. During the summer months surfing is restricted to certain areas.

For those looking to stay on dry land there are many things to do. A fairly new and well-kept children's playground is available along with covered pavilions, grills and fire pits. There are plenty of restrooms, showers and wash down points. The vast shoreline offers plenty of sand for building sandcastles, soaking up the sun or going for a stroll or jog along the water's edge.

The beach in Oceanside is home to the longest wooden pier along the West Coast, spanning 1,954 feet. The pier is also famous for being the longest over-water pier in Southern California. The current pier was first built in 1925, and then restored in 1988. For those not wanting to walk the length of the pier a tram is available for a small fee. About halfway down the length of the pier visitors can find a small snack shop, payphones, restrooms and bait and tackle shop. At the end of the pier is Ruby's Diner- a 50's style restaurant with delicious burgers, shakes and more. Be prepared for a small wait, especially on the weekends. The wait is worthwhile though as visitors can watch people fish and they might catch the occasional glimpse of dolphins or fish swimming. On a clear day you can see La Jolla, the Coronado Islands, and Catalina Island.

South of the pier is the Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre which hosts many events throughout the year. The Oceanside Beach Community Center is located on the north side of the pier. Directly under the pier are a McDonalds and several other vendors.

Pay parking and metered parking are located all along the beach. The closest parking lot is located on the south side of the pier.
