October 14th is Bald and Free Day

Forget those stupid late-night infomercials that promise you a cure for your balding hair. October 14th is Bald and Free Day. It's time to embrace your baldness. Become one with your receding hairline. Thinning hair? Why not shave it all and embrace the bald? Lost your hair due to medical reasons or treatments? Forget the hats or wigs today and show off your baldness.

Bust out the Turtle Wax people and let's get ready to be bald and free!

So men fear balding. They worry that they won't be as attractive without their hair or that it will make them appear older. Some worry that they may not get the same respect as before if they lose their hair. These are just a few of the many reasons why men worry about balding. Today is the day to toss those cares into the wind.

But Bald and Free Day isn't limited to just men. Some women and children are bald as well. Embrace your beautiful bald head today. Let this be the one day you let it shine and don't fear what people will think.

If you have a balding man in your life, let him know you still think he is handsome. Some women even prefer the balding man. Baldness can be very sexy. But it's not all about looks. There are some very practical reasons why going bald can be a great asset.

There are many things to rejoice about being bald. There's no more wasted money on shampoos, conditioners and other hair styling products. You no longer have to deal with making appointments at the barber shop and you never have to ask yourself, "Does my hair look okay?"

Imagine the freedom! You can have the one hair style that truly allows you to roll out of bed and go.

In honor of Bald and Free Day, let's also take this opportunity to debunk some common myths about balding.

- Standing on your head will not increase circulation and make hair grow back.

- Wearing a hat will not cause baldness (unless the hat is unusually tight and you wear it like that every day)

- Blow drying and styling products cause baldness. These methods can cause broken hair and split ends but do not lead to total baldness.

- Yes, some cases of balding are hereditary. But there are also other factors involved.

- Specific foods will not make your hair fall out. (But a poor overall diet can affect baldness).

- Baldness does not come from poisons or toxins in the air.

The more you learn about balding, the more you will see that in many cases, it is a perfectly natural part of life and it isn't really as big a deal as you may think. Relax and enjoy your baldness, even if it is just one day of the year (today!).

See a discussion on "Bald Men: Is it Hot or Not?" on the Today Show recently.
Panelists, such as resplendently bald Tiki Barber, agree that hot it is.
