October 30 - National Candy Corn Day

Your Favorite Fall Treat

JUNEANN REED
Bet you didn't know that October 30 is National Candy Corn Day. I'll also bet you didn't know that candy corn has been around since the 1800s. Originally they made three passes by hand to get the three colors in one kernel. Today candy corn is quickly turned out with the use of computers and machines.

The Herman Goelitz company is known as the original maker. Brach's candy is now the top seller of candy corn. According to Wikipedia, 20 million pounds or 9,000 tons of candy corn are sold each year. That means the earth could be circled 4.25 times with candy corn laying end to end. Can you picture how many kernels that would be?

Candy corn was especially popular during the early 1900s as many people in the US were farmers. They loved the candy kernels that are about 3 times the dried kernels of real corn. Most fall candy corn is orange, yellow and has a white tip, but some portrays Indian corn and that has a chocolate end. [You often seen Indian corn in fall decor.]

What is your favorite? Or do you like the pumpkins and other varieties even more?

At first candy corn was sold in big buckets and then it was dispensed at candy counters everywhere. Today bags of various sizes are available wherever candies are sold.

Have you ever mixed candy corn with peanuts? If you haven't tried this yummy treat, go to the store now and try the sugar/salt mix. You'll find it's delicious!

A serving size is considered 22 pieces and candy corn is said to have no fat. So indulge in this favorite fall treat as it's commonly only found at Halloween and fall of the year. However, lately you'll be able to find it at Easter in pastel colors, but for many of us, that just isn't the same.

Candy corn is also fun for kids to use in fall crafts. Adults also use candy corn and glue it onto fabric for splendid fall projects. Corn kernel fabric can also be purchased. You'll easily find a great variety of candy corn crafts and kid projects online.

So whether you wish you have a candy corn costume, eat the kernels right out of the bag, mix them with peanuts or decorate your fall table, buy yourself a bag or two. A simple, attractive fall decoration is quickly made by filling a tall, thin vase with candy corn and placing it on a pile of fall leaves. Add a couple of large or small pumpkins and you'll be ready for any gathering.

I'll be thinking of you on October 30, National Candy Corn Day.
