October 9 - National Moldy Cheese Day

Do You Have Any "Science Projects" in Your Frig?

JUNEANN REED
I was excited to find out that October 9 is National Moldy Cheese Day. Like many of us, we often have cheese in the frig as it can be used in a great variety of ways. Maybe I'll want a snack of crackers and cheese, want to mix it in a casserole or soup - or plop a piece of cheese on our burgers.

However, like most families, our lives are busy and interrupted. Meanwhile that bag of cheese somehow slithers to the back of the frig. Sometimes I'll even check and say - no, we have don't have any cheese.

Usually it's my husband, looking for his favorite left-over or something special in the mix who finds the cheese. But little can he tell that it's cheese because it may, by then, be of various colors. Sometimes it's lightly coated in white. Sometimes it's green. Once in awhile it's almost totally black. That is the little chunk that's way in the rear corner with the pickle jar in front of it.

So now, October 9, I think I'll clean out my frig to check for the national product of the day. Hey moldy cheese, where are you hiding? Hopefully I'll just find a couple of lovely and fresh packages. They will be deftly located in the cheese/meat drawer ready for use. No family comment will be needed.

What is it with cheese? Does anyone ever cut off a little white chunk when no one is looking? Do you think it was cheese mold that was the forerunner of penicillin? What do they put in the grated cheese to keep it from sticking together and molding immediately? Most likely I don't want to know the answer. Cheese is healthy!

Maybe you and your family are so well organized that you never find the national product of the day. As for me, I'll work on that, but I'm betting that sometime a little sliver will, once again, slither to that dark back corner of my Whirlpool frig.

Just how old is that piece of moldy cheese behind the pickle jar? When did it slither to the back of your frig?
