October is Animal Safety and Protection Month

Lori Piper
What do feral and domesticated animals have in common this month? What do four legged (although sometimes tripod as well) family members and wild life animals have in common this month? October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month.

All animals are vital to our society. Therefore, it is important that we promote their safety. Even though it is only one month, safety and protection can happen year round!

Ways to promote animal safety and protection month- promotion

ePromos ( www.ePromos.com) has a large selection of products that will showcase your support of National Animal Safety and Protection month. Get stressed? We all do! They have animal shaped stress balls! Get some for you whole office, family, church group, or vet office. You can chose which animal stress ball you want. Are you a cat lover? Go crazy for felines! They have several other ways to promote-log onto their site and start promoting!

Ways to promote animal safety and protection month- children's activities

Take you child to the zoo. Start educating them on animal care. Research into adopting a pet at your local zoo for the month. Take your child to a shelter or rescue and volunteer to walk dogs or play in the cat room with kittens. Are there local stables where you live? Ask about taking your child on a tour and see what goes into caring for horses. Log onto www.crayola.com and view their calendar. They have some wonderful animal printable pages for children to color and from which to learn.

Ways to promote animal safety and protection month- advocacy

Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper. Contact local radio and television personalities to bring animals to the forefront this month. Contact your local politicians and see what is being done to make sure animal care services are safe and humane. Join a local Yahoo group or other Internet group and see what grass roots and hard work can accomplish in your town. With enough action from the people, pet mills can be stopped.

Ways to promote animal safety and protection month- personal changes

We could all be healthier. Eat more vegetables, and consume less meat. Are all your household items, including cosmetics, made cruelty free? Eat only cage free eggs. Are your personal animal's micro-chipped? Do they have identification tags on their collars? Donate several collars to your local vet from area pet stores such as Petsmart. All the chosen recipients need do is to take the donated tag to a store to have it personalized.

There is no need to go to the extreme of Leona, but updating your will to include a pet trust fund will ensure your pet's safety and protection for the length of his or hers or their lives. Do you reside in a disaster prone zone? Are your pets are protected as you are? Prepare a kit for them as you would for your family.

Ways to promote animal safety and protection month- training and activation

Volunteer to assist local shelters and animal controls visit your schools to discuss animal safety. Coordinate a low cost spat and neuter day in your area. Take an animal first aid class. Foster an animal.

There are so many ways to promote animal safety and protection. Chose just one and you will have made a difference!

    Excellent advice.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but one thing I've learned not to do is to put my deaf cat in his outdoor patio pen on Halloween. Just a prudent move I think. I enjoy Halloween, but he stays inside with me;)
