All spring and summer, Major League Baseball teams battle it out for the right to play in October. After the long and grueling summer, two teams will eventually play in World Series. The unscripted and defining times of the year happen for baseball in October. Fans may not follow the regular season as closely, but will do so in the postseason, especially if their own team is still alive with a shot to win it all.
Also in October, the National Football League is in their second month of the season. This is usually the month where the contenders and pretenders start to distance themselves from one another. America's most popular sport captivates fans every Sunday, and fantasy owners, too.
Personally, the main reason why I love sports in October is because of college football. Many defining games and rivalries exist in the month of October, with my favorite being the Red River Shootout between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners with the latter being my favorite team. Pre-game traditions and conference matchups heat up as they all are going for a post-season birth in a bowl game. The BCS standings come out in October which later determines which teams will play for the BCS Championship in January.
The National Hockey League kicks off their season in October as well. All the hard-hitting ice action is in full swing and it is fun to watch which teams will start out strong for all those hockey fans out there.
The National Basketball Association begins training camp in October, and teams have to set their rosters by the end of the month before the regular season begins. The season usually kicks off at that end of October, and the frenzy of making the NBA playoffs begin for everyone.
College basketball begins their practices in October, and the time of year where teams jockey for positioning in the NCAA Tournament begins. It is always fun to see teams come out of nowhere to shock fans by pulling off an upset or two. While waiting for the season to tipoff fans, here in North Carolina where I live, are impatient about having to wait until November for it to get going.
NASCAR, golf, tennis, and other sports are still on-going in October as well. The month provides something for every kind of sports fan. Besides the time where kids dress up in Halloween costumes, it is a time where sports are in high gear, too. It will be trick or treat for all teams playing that month, but it sure is fun to not know how the outcome will turn out for all those sports whether it is the World Series or a league that is just getting underway. Oh yeah, I love October!
