Most people are aware of the phases of the moon that occur during the course of a month. Traditional almanacs and calendars indicate moon phases and societies have observed a connection between the moon and mankind for centuries.
What many people are not aware of is that the moon transits each of the twelve astrological, or zodiac, signs during the monthly lunar cycle, staying in each sign for two or three days. Each sign has the elemental quality of fire, earth, air, or water as well as its own unique set of characteristic attributes. These elements and attributes can have as noticeable an effect on our daily activities and emotions as the pull of a full moon can have on the tides.
October will be an interesting month. It may take some of us a week or two to realize it actually IS October because the planetary energy may have our attention focused on unresolved issues or projects that were begun in September. Indeed, it is best to put off any major undertakings, moves, or decisions until the middle of the month when the planets support new beginnings.
Weather-wise, there is potential for more moisture than we have seen recently during the first half of the month and frost before the 15th is possible. We can look forward to an exceptionally beautiful leaf season this year. By the close of the month, we will have settled into an autumnal state of mind.
October 1, 27, 28 - Libra/Air
Yard work that highlights appearances is on tap now. Retire the summer items, rake, put out fall decorations. Couples, on the 1st, make plans to strengthen your love this approaching weekend. On the 27th, invite friends to a last-minute Halloween party - this moon can help you plan and shop all in a day!
October 2, 3, 29, 30 - Scorpio/Water
Favors fishing. Any relationship intrigue or discord felt on the 2nd will be exposed or resolved on the 3rd. This drama, too, shall pass! In general, all male/female relationships, both romantic and platonic, will have a greater degree of miscommunication and misunderstanding until after the 15th. Some people like this kind of spice, but for those who don't, just make the choice to remain neutral. New moon on the 28th in dark and mysterious Scorpio will inspire many of us to go all out on the Halloween theme this year.
October 4, 5, 6, 31 - Sagittarius/Fire
Hunters, get out your bows and practice during the sign of Sagittarius, the Archer. This first weekend of the month is a great time to have an end-of-summer campout or cookout. Sagittarius rules horses - this would be a fine time to ride and enjoy the outdoors. On Halloween, the kids will be more jazzed up and speedy than usual, even before all the sugar. The moon will be just a sliver while they are out trick-or-treating. Consider handing out glow sticks as an alternative "treat" to make them more visible in the dark. It's a great night for a party!
October 7, 8 - Capricorn/Earth
Add lime, fertilize, mulch fallow ground now for the winter months. Attend to the wood pile. If you are in sales, make the presentation or close the deal today. This is the best time in the first half of the month for determined effort yielding satisfying results, no matter what the situation. Persevere.
October 9, 10, 11 - Aquarius/Air
This may be the last best opportunity for any outdoor painting projects. Telephone communications may be a comedy of errors. Internet and computer glitches are possible. Parents or teachers of teens beware - boundaries may be tested and rules broken during this moon. All of us should attempt to broaden our horizons or our minds and try seeing things from another point of view.
October 12, 13 - Pisces/Water
Fishing is favored. Winterize swimming pools, ponds, wells, and radiators in vehicles. Check and insulate pipes and water heaters. A Sunday sermon may have a special message or impart a feeling of peace. Take time to read or watch something inspiring and share the inspiration with others. Monday morning might catch a few of us oversleeping!
October 14, 15 - Aries/Fire
Burn brush and yard waste. Check and repair property fencing. The full moon energy of the 14th spills over into the 15th, joining Mercury going into direct motion in the sign of Libra. Aries and Libra sit on opposite sides of the zodiac wheel and they both are cardinal, which means they are bossy and like to direct things. Energy bottled up since the 1st will be let loose now in a big way. We all know what happens when we open a bottle of soda that's been shaken! Expect the "soda effect" in some area of your life. What area that will be can only be seen in your own natal chart. Take heart, whatever explodes was getting ready to blow for a while and you will feel so much lighter after it does.
October 16, 17 - Taurus/Earth
Pick those pumpkins! Dig up any tubers or bulbs that need to winter in storage. The word for today is "stabilize". Food can be good medicine. A hearty soup or stew and warm bread or rolls can do the trick.
October 18, 19 - Gemini/Air
This is the weekend to see the leaves, take a drive, attend an outdoor festival and enjoy all the sights and sounds of the season. Venus moves into jovial and adventurous Sagittarius on Sunday, helping to amplify the fun factor of this light-hearted moon sign. Anyone not having fun now needs a pillow fight or a pie in the face! Make it a no TV weekend.
October 20, 21 - Cancer/Water
This sign rules family and all the good feeling associated with the warmth of the home. As the work and school week begins, the buzz will be about the events of the past weekend. Aren't you glad you made the effort to make your own memories with your loved ones, too? On a larger scale, much talk revolves around the upcoming presidential election. Please be sure to register to vote.
October 22, 23 - Leo/Fire
A good time for cutting down deadwood and clearing brush. Children take precedence now and may be getting a bit out of control as Halloween approaches. The sun shifts from Libra to Scorpio. Lingering thoughts of summer will pass and the hibernating feeling of winter settles in. Turn your attention to your craft room or workshop and consider making some gifts for Christmas this year. Not creative? Not true! Easy-to-follow kits can be found at Wal-Mart or a craft supply store.
October 24, 25, 26 - Virgo/Earth
This moon highlights the hearth and home and favors organization and planning, but this doesn't mean you have to stay home all weekend! In fact, the lunar energy is assisted greatly by Jupiter and Saturn now, making this weekend THE best time of the month to stock up on groceries, home improvement supplies, tools, etc. Watch the sales on mowers, leaf blowers, and weed eaters. Some good early sales may also be found on Christmas decorations. The energy begins to synthesize and feel more balanced now as the month begins to wind down and we find ourselves feeling grateful for what feels like a return to normalcy.
