October Movies Range from Horror to Michael Jackson

Take a Quick Peak at Some Films for October

Robin Vinci
October will soon be here and films range from creepy to a few highly anticipated releases.

Shutter Island

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio reunite on their fourth film. The thriller follows a U.S. Marshall on the trails of a female murderer who escaped the prison on the island. But soon it is about more than a murderer. DiCaprio may never leave the island.

An eerie tale, that Laeta Kalogridis adapts from a novel by Dennis Lehane. Also stars Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo.

Couples Retreat

Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman and Faizon Love co-star in a story of four couples who go to a tropical island resort. Once they arrive, they find that on-site couples counseling is mandatory. Will it make them closer or drive them apart? There are lots of funny situations and this could be the surprise big fall comedy.

Peter Billingsley directs and Favreau wrote the script.

Zombieland

If you love zombie movies, this is one not to be missed.

The horror comedy centers on survivors who must forge a friendship to defeat zombies that have taken over the world. Woody Harrelson stars in the film directed by Ruben Fleischer.

It has some gore and blood but many humorous moments as well.

Also stars Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg.

Where the Wild Things Are

This is expected to be the big movie of the fall.

According to hsx.com, "Tom Hanks' production company, Playtone Productions, will adapt Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are into feature film. While Sendak's stories have been made into animated shows for television, attempts to turn it into a CGI-animated film had been stalled for years. The live-action film will be directed by Spike Jonze."

This is a family fantasy movie. By looking at previews, I'm not sure it will live up to its hype.

The Road

This is adapted from Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It stars Viggo Mortensen as a father trying to get his son to safety after a nuclear disaster. He battles starving victims. Some of them have turned into cannibals. This is dubbed a drama but has a lot of horror to it. Definitely not a fun date night film. Co-stars Charlize Theron and Robert Duvall.

Saw VI

Need I say more than Saw VI. Horror, blood and gore and not for the faint of heart. Lionsgate Films shows no sign of giving Jigsaw and their torture horror franchise any time to breath. Lots of special effects and some pieces of the puzzle are revealed. Halloween may be a good night to see this one. Kevin Greutart will direct. Previews are shown on fearnet.com.

Astro Boy

"The Japanese animated character Astro Boy will become a CGI-animated feature via Imagi Animation Studios. The storyline follows a grieving scientist who builds a robot in the image of his dead son. The robot boy, in turn, uses his extraordinary powers to fight crime. Created by Osamu Tezuka, Astro Boy had its first incarnation on Japanese television in 1963," according to hsx.com.

Voices include Nathan Lane, Nicholas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, Charlize Theron, Donald Sutherland and Kristen Bell.

Amelia

Hilary Swank will, two-time Oscar-winning actress, will portray the pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart. While trying to circumnavigate the earth in 1937, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the South Pacific. They were never found. This long awaited film will show its version of what could have happened if the pair survived a crash landing on a deserted island.

Ewan MacGregor and Richard Gere co-star. Possible Oscar nominations related to this film.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

Vampire movies are bigger than ever. This one is based on the popular children's story Cirque du Freak by Irish author Darren Shan. It gets a big screen adaptation from Oscar-winning writer Brian Helgeland. The story centers on a young boy who meets a vampire at a freak show and joins him on the road. He intends to find a new life and become a vampire as well. Lauren Shuler Donner produces this for Universal.

This Is It: Michael Jackson Concert Film

I highly doubt anything at the cinemas will be larger than this.

According to hsx.com, "Sony has secured the rehearsal videos from the late Michael Jackson's "This Is It" concert tour for a feature film. Kenny Ortega will direct the concert film which will also feature an alternative version of Thriller."

It is dubbed a much anticipated concert drama musical film. We will soon see what Jackson was rehearsing before prior to his untimely death.
