The first show starts off showing a young man leaving his hometown for a 6 week trip to find himself not knowing that it would take a lot longer. Then you see the man again in New York where he is a writer who left home 10 years earlier and is now being asked to go back home to speak at the college. But the problem is his book was about his hometown, now he has to go back and face the people he disgraced in his book. He soon realizes not everyone is thrilled to see him, mainly his ex-high school sweetheart Hannah. A secret between the friends is revealed to Nick in hopes he will keep it a secret. He also notices Hannah has a ten year old son. And despite her efforts to convince Nick the boy isn't his, Nick thinks otherwise and decides to stay in Knight's Ridge. Now Nick faces a hard path to rebuilding friendships, trust, and his new life back in his hometown.
After Nick decides to stay in his hometown he lies to Hannah and tells her he got a job at the college, which leads him to beg for a job in the strangest ways. He also confronted Hannah about the similarities between him and her son, Sam. And she tries to convince him that everyone has those similarities. Still he continues to pursue a friendship with Sam. Nick is also having his morals tested to the limits as he tries to keep a secret.
Nick find himself in a position to choose between his new love interest and his job, only to find out it was just a test of his priorities. Meanwhile his life is being threaten by Hannah's ex-boyfriend who believes she dumped him because of Nick's return. And Nick's efforts to help Sam impress a girl fail, causing a rift in their friendship. Which doesn't help his situation with Hannah.
