Odd Laws

Chloe Thorn
In many states there are obscure laws that are odd or silly. Such as in Quitman, GA it is actually illegal for a chicken to cross a road. Who would get fined it does not say. Other strange laws include in South Bend, IN it is illegal for a monkey to smoke cigarettes, in Vermont you break the law if at anytime you deny gods existence, and in Florida a woman that is unmarried cannot parachute on Sundays otherwise they will be imprisoned. Now no matter how silly these might be. There are other more concerning laws that are cited by criminals to get away with the worst behavior.

In Arkansas and California wife beating can be termed as legal if it happens under certain circumstances. What message is this sending that it would be allowed for any reason? In Michigan a woman's hair, any hair belongs to her husband to do with as he wishes. These are both very serious controlling laws that are used by men today to abuse and control their spouses.

Some other odd and unknown laws that should be know is that in Florida, if you have sex in any other position than missionary it is illegal. It is illegal to swear in front of children or women in the state of Michigan. In New York you can be fined $25.00 for flirting, especially men they are not allowed to give a woman a desirous look. If they continue to flaunt their flirting than men can be required to wear horse blinders in public. Also in Ohio it is illegal to fish for Whales on Sunday, and illegal to get fish drunk.

Some ironic laws are that in New York the penalty for jumping off a building is death. In Texas it is illegal to drive without windshield wipers, you don't have to have a windshield just the wipers. And a recent law that was passed in TX is that criminals are required to give their victims 24 hours notice about what time and crime they will be committing. Lastly in Texas again they banned the entire Encyclopedia Britannica because one chapter has the formula for making beer.

Although most of these are incredibly silly, there are some that would allow people to do things that our common knowledge tells us would be wrong. So keep in mind all the laws in your state, they aren't always logical or there for the safety and well being of your loved ones.

Many of the laws we find difficult to understand are relics of decades or even centuries ago. This does not mean they're any less bizarre or wrong morally. However, many things that were legal long ago would be seen as horribly wrong today. We need look no further than legal slavery before the civil war. These bad laws get repealed once their impacts are found to be unacceptable to enough people. I suspect that if anyone tried to use the law about a woman's hair to defend assaulting his wife it would be found to be illegal and he'd still be found guilty. If not, the press would have a field day and the law would be repealed very quickly.

They are ridiculous, and the fact they were created in the first places makes you wonder
