Ode to Being an "Auntie"

Josephine Sheppard, MA, PhD, NHC
When I close my eyes I can see a time that

I might cry -

To pick up my little one and brush off

His scrapes and bruises...

Then I smile widely as I open my eyes,

Knowing that is but a weary dream -

For the joy of my reality

Is being your Auntie.

There are times when I have shared deep concern with

My sister, over teacher reports and

Behavior not quite restricted...

And then I smile to myself as I joyfully

Recall -

I love being your Auntie.

I love the times we played on the side walk, drawing

Silly pictures that were a portrait of you -

Or maybe that was me?

I love staying up just a little later, so we could watch a

Movie together and have an extra treat...

Oops, I think I just told on both of us -

How I love being your Auntie!

I love when you share about the new things that happen in your

Day, or at school, at play or a new friend

You just made...

Best of all,

I love you -

I love being your

Auntie!

No kids for me, just 'auntie' to one fantastic niece!

Being an "auntie" myself, I love this! :)
