Ode to Cake

Matthew Stoker
Cake is like a happy cup!

When it's good it fills you up.

Oh, to drink shortbread and lemony,

from a candied teacup like tea.

Oh white cake decorated so prettily,

won't you come and sit with me?

Some say what the Queen says will be,

and that she has raisin cake with tea!

Often used to celebrate,

children think it's really quite great!

Made with flour and with eggs,

for centuries it's received great raves.

Even if a wedding cake has gone stale,

it's pretty features still prevail.

What once was rich flavored glee,

is now a testament to matrimony.

Oh why can't we eat cake every day?

I heard that that is the gnome way.

Scurrying around in tiny hats,

they make their cakes with dried bats.

But if cake is not your cup of tea,

what can we get for thee?

A wedding pudding, or a birthday fudge?

These desserts don't get nearly as much love.

A cake is best when eaten by more than a few,

a lonely raspberry cake is eaten by only you.

Cake which was once warm and fluffy,

now makes you a little bit snuffy.

The Queen mixes your emotions with a rake,

if you don't like love then let you eat cake!

Adorned with candles most merrily,

can any other pastry sing so sweetly?
