Ode to Spring Flowers

Tony Payne
In February I really long
For those first nice sunny days
For I know that all that sunshine
Will cause spring flowers to raise

The first sign of winter's departing
Are the wonderful colourful blooms
The snowdrops, primrose and crocus
And the blackbird singing his tunes

Last weekend was really quite special
The sun came out for a while
The crocuses down in the garden
Came out for a while with a smile

But this week has been really icy
And the chill drove them back in the ground
When I looked for them yesterday morning
Not a single one was to be found

So here's to the beautiful crocus
That heralds the start of the Spring
And here's to the warmth of the sunshine
That makes blackbirds happily sing

Next month there will start appearing
The first of the gold daffodils
You can see them in parks and on road sides
And in planters on some window sills

England looks lovely in flower
So make sure that your camera's in focus
Give thanks to the Spring, and the birds that do sing
Not forgetting the humble crocus

It's been a rough winter so far for so many people hasn't it. I hope the weather improves soon.

I'll be glad to see the flowers come out soon, I am tired of cold weather we've had a lot of bad weather this year.

Can't wait for Spring! It snowed here again in Raleigh last night, ugh!

I've given up on seeing the ground for a while, but I would like to see more of the sun!

That is very true. Everywhere looks so pretty when buried under 4 feet of snow, but it's a royal pain having to clear it, and then it often takes months for the last of it to melt. We are very lucky in the UK.

They came up last Saturday morning, I posted a slidshow of them last week. However by Sunday they had gone again. It's bitterly cold here this week, but nowhere near as bad as the Eastern USA.

You have crocus already?!!! I so envy you, mine are hunkered down under - not to pop up until the great thaw! Cheers.
