Odor Removal: Febreeze Versus Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer

Donna Porter
Febreeze kicked off a new trend in odor removal products providing much more than an odor cover-up, designed to be safe for most fabrics. Several companies have since tried to duplicate the Febreeze phenomenon without much success.

For many a domestic goddess and scent-savvy bachelor, Febreeze has no equal, including the generic versions of the product.

Enter Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer and Febreeze finally has some competition.

Renuzit products are no longer just about odor cover-up. Some of you may remember the days of scent cones that did little for odor control as they quickly evaporated into an ugly congealed and hardened glob. Renuzit has come a long way since.

Odor Removal Product Comparison
To begin, this odor removal comparison consist of Febreeze Extra Strength mist versus Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer, fine mist spray. Both odor removal products are designed to eliminate odors in the air, on fabrics and in carpets.

Odor Removal and Application
The first thing I noticed about Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer, besides the lovely scent, is that the fine mist provides less dampening of fabrics and better control than Febreeze. Comparing two spots on the same comforter, each sprayed with the respective product, Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizers evaporated several minutes before Febreeze did.

This alone reassures me that the product is safer for questionable fabrics and eliminates the need to substantially dampen clothes, linens, drapes, and furniture.

Scents Offered

While few products can beat Febreeze Air Effects for scent, it is not designed for comprehensive odor removal but rather to freshen the air. I have found some of the Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer sprays provide about equal appeal.

Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer comes in five scents, two of which I've tried, and offers a bit of something for everyone: sweet (Orchard Garden), citrus (Citrus Sunburst) and two fresh scents called After the Rain and Pure Breeze. Besides Orchard Garden I originally used the lightly floral Mountain Fresh, in a lavender bottle, but it's difficult to find if it's still in production.

In my opinion, all of the Renuzit products provide a better fragrance than Febreeze Extra Strength, and don't have that overwhelming, cheap perfume or hideous aerosol smell associated with some odor removal and cover-up products.

Types of Odor Removal

Stale Smoke

In this household both odor removal products, along with others, have been utilized to eliminate the smell of stale smoke. Stale smoke is a difficult odor to conquer and sometimes I use additional products such as Arm & Hammer Odor Eliminator (for carpets) and Oust with Febreeze Air Effects. Yeah, I'm a bit obsessive with air fresheners.

Generally, however, I use the Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer on a regular basis for fabrics and carpet and the others on a weekly basis or so. Renuzit is the only one of the aforementioned products designed for fabrics.

Pet Smells

Previously I tried Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer when my former roommate had a pet urine war, following the addition of a new adoptee.

The Renuzit Super Order Remover helped me maintain my sanity until I was in a pet-free home again. Don't get me wrong, I love pets but can neither stand the smell of pet pee, especially litter boxes, nor wish to put up with it unless it's my own four-legged darling.

It is important to clean any pet messes before application. Neither Febreeze nor Renuzit can work miracles with pet odors if they are well absorbed into the carpet padding, though Renuzit does a superior job overall.

Price and Availability

Febreeze costs more than Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer and the latter can often be found in the dollar store for a couple of bucks.

One drawback to the Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer is that it is not well-stocked in many stores as is the Febreeze, and when it is, only one or two selections may be available.

Conclusion and New Febreeze Products

With increasing competition in the odor removal industry, Febreeze has launched new scents with claims of a new formula. By description these scents seem to compare pretty well to the Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer formulas.

All things being equal the finer mist provided by the Renuzit puts it ahead of the two odor removal products. With that said Febreeze Fabric Freshener is a solid product but if you are not 100 percent happy with it, or would like a little more variety in odor removal products, give the Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer a try. It's not your mom's odor cover-up and costs a bit less.

I have to call ahead to hotels and tell them to NOT use febreeze in the room I will be staying in. Awful trend, casual contact makes me have migraine-type headache and hangover feeling for up to 2 hrs depending on the "dose". boo
Please consider if you are hurting someone or some pet by using this product. Thanks.

I recently became very allergic to Febreeze. I'm wondering if anyone else having this problem? Renuzit does not bother me though.

My son plays hockey and my brother is a police officer. My brother found this stuff ARMORPUR at a police expo to get rid of the awful stink of his bulletproof vest - they can't wash it and bleach is a no-no. He and his buddies hate the Fabreze and says it actually makes their vest smell worse. They tried everything. He ordered me some Armorpur online and I sprayed it on my sons sports gear and also used the Armorpur fine wash on his hockey uniform and it really got rid of that smell. He can finally bring his gear bag in from the garage.

For the heck of it I washed the dog blanket with Armorpur and now it smells so nice so I'll use it from now on. On the bottle it says you can use if for that stuff too.

Hi All!! I saw this and HAD to tell you about this!! My house smelled really bad, smoke, mold, pet odors, you name it, thats what I get for leaving it up to someone else to take care of it for a week! Anyway my friend told me about this product called RoomShocker. I got it from Odorscienceglobal.com and it took less than 4 hours to complete, completely safe, and I didn't have to do ANY work! It was great! And to top it off it's really inexpensive! Turns out they also have products for your cars called AutoVaccine etc. Definitely give it a look, I live by this stuff now and won't use anything else!

I always used Febreze, up until I had cat urine odors to get rid of. I tried the Febrese Extra Strength and it got me nowhere. I tried some specific pet odor products that also got me nowhere. It seemed everything I used simply covered up the odor. Then, I tried Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer in Citrus Sunburst(since it was specified for pet use). IT ACTUALLY WORKS! And it was one of the cheapest items I've tried. The smell is not at all offensive or cheap and the urine smells are long gone! The list of ingredients is as follows: Water, alcohol, fragrance, surfactant, odor neutralizers, ph adjuster, preservative.
    Great product!

Great review! Some of us are allergic to fragrance, so we can't use these types pf things, but I will keep this in mind when sending household gift baskets to my mom. :-)
