O'Doul's Amber Non-Alcoholic Beer Review

The Informer
We've all had those times. When you've had too much to drink already, but want to keep drinking with the group, or don't like experiencing the effects of alcohol, but still want to drink with the buds. As you probably know, a non-alcoholic beer is a great solution for either of these situations, or for during the day if you simply enjoy the taste of hops.

A personal favorite when it comes to non-alcoholic beer is O'Doul's Amber. The amber is the of course darker version of the original O'Doul's beer. Being an amber, this beer has much more flavor than the original, which frankly is rather mediocre. This beer has its pro's and its con's, like any drink. Let us explore the ups and downs of a frosty O'Doul's Amber beer.

Every beer has its high points. This Amber hits hard in the flavor department. It has a very rich aroma and the taste lingers on the tongue after the sip. The taste approaches the "natural" feeling of a dark beer, while not really touching on the bitterness of one. If you dislike the full bitterness of a dark beer, however still want a fuller flavor, this beer is a great choice.

Unfortunately, the O'Doul's Amber does have its downs. The general rule in beer is that the lower the alcohol level, the worst the aftertaste. As you can imagine, then, a non-alcoholic (less than .5% alcohol) will leave an unpleasant taste a little while after finishing the bottle. The Amber does have a worse aftertaste than the original, which could be credited to the fuller flavor, giving the aftertaste more background to draw upon.

Furthermore, the O'Doul's Amber beer is bottled in dark brown glass, which protects it from Sunlight, which can fry the taste of a beer stored in a clear or light colored bottle. The darker bottle lets in less light, protecting that amber taste.

The Overall Verdict: As far as Non-Alcoholic Beers Go, I'd give this beer a 9/10. I think it loses the point off a perfect score solely because it has an average aftertaste for a non-alcoholic beer. A reduced or absent aftertaste could win it that last point. What is important to note however, Is that although the O'Doul's Amber beer gets a 9 out of 10, it is the best non-alcoholic beer I've tried. So if you're at the store picking out a non-alcoholic beer, be reminded that for a fuller, more natural, yet not bitter taste, this beer is the answer.
