Of Being Still

"Be Still and Know that I Am God." - Psalm 46:10

Julie Sadie
In times of difficulties, when I am faced with challenges that are seemingly higher than a mountain, when the burden in my shoulder is so heavy, when my mouth could no longer utter words of prayer, and my heart is crying out, the Lord always tell me to "be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

Being "still" means to be motionless, to be at rest, to be quiet, to utter no sound, to be in a state of calm (Noah's Webster Dictionary at Biblos.com). But how can I be calm when there is chaos in my heart? When there is no peace in my mind? When there are uncertainties in life? Yet, God said, "be still and know that I am God".

To "know" means to perceive or apprehend clearly and certainly, to understand, to have full information. "That I am GOD" connotes to acknowledge, to recognize the great "I AM"(Exodus 3:13-14, "I AM WHO I AM), the Maker of heavens and earth and everything in it (Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth").

In my journey in the Christian life, I discovered that I can only be still when I have complete trust in God. There were times when I find it hard to trust Him because my problems overshadowed my faith. The more I do things on my own, the more my burdens get even heavier. Trusting God completely will only be possible if you know Him by having a personal and intimate relationship with Him, by recognizing His greatness and understanding fully well His Supremacy (Psalm 100:3, 'Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture").

It is only when I acknowledge God to be in full control of the situation that I can be still, be quiet, be at peace. And in the stillness of the moment, I let God remind me of the many times He came to my rescue whenever I needed Him. I reflect on the numerous times He had shown His goodness by providing for my needs, for healing me when I am sick, for making my life great by giving me my loving family, for surrounding me with good friends.

Being still enables me to comprehend the kind of God I have. It is only in my silent and humble submission to a great, great God, that I can experience peace that the world cannot offer.

It is one of the hardest things to do. Be still before God. We (me included) want to depend upon our own strength & abilities instead of waiting on God. He wants up to come to Him, as any parent would. Nice work here friend. (How ironic, your husbands name is Jack also...did you know that Jack is derived from John, which means, literraly, "Gift of God?!" Tell him that.). Thumbs Up here! : - )
