Off Clip-On Mosquito Repellent Warnings

Has Off Clip-On Insect Repellent Been Tested Sufficiently

Stephen Joltin
The new Off Clip-On personal mosquito repellent seems to be so much in demand, it is hard to find on a store's shelf. The refills are there and this article is based on the warnings the company put placed on the refills and the web-site: offproducts.com/clip-on-mosquito-repellent/. This information is very worrisome to me and may be to you as well.

Under cautions the following are listed. "Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin". The problem I have with this is that it can be worn on a person's belt, on a pocketbook strap or placed on a table where the vapors would be likely breathed in by persons using this device. The vapors could also be absorbed by via skin contact. This seems like something I would not like to have on my person. I would rather get the mosquito bites.

The next warning is "Avoid contact with the skin, eyes or clothing... breathing vapor". How can this be avoided? I have the same concern as I stated for the previous caution.

Several other cautions are stated. Feel free to read the cautions listed on the device and refill boxes. Animal contact is also listed in the cautions.

The first aid listed after the cautions include "Call a poison-control center or doctor immediately for treatment advice". This is another red flag to me. Why would a person risk his or her health to keep pests from biting them and causing admittedly itchy bumps on their skin. Most of us grew up being the target of mosquitoes and are none the worse for wear.

The final first aid procedure is "If inhaled move the person to fresh air. If the person is not breathing, call 911 or an ambulance, then give artificial respiration, preferably mouth to mouth if possible."
Each insert for the Off-Clip on contains 32.1% Metofluthrin, a synthetic solvent developed in China. According to castboolits.gunloads.com this compound is a "very nasty neurotoxicant known to cause all sorts of damage to lab rats resulting in death." They state that maximum exposure limits have not been determined for children or adults.

Thriftyfun.com has Off Clip-On product user's comments on the effectiveness of Off Clip-On. There seems to be an almost even divide of commenter who state the product was effective for keeping mosquitoes away or not at all effective in doing this.

I think I'll wait until more information comes to light before I use this product. I can't seem to get an Off Clip-On device anyway since all stores that carry the device are sold out and haven't received their reorders from the warehouse. This in itself is a possible red flag.

This was very popular when this article was written, not so much now. The word about its harmfull effects must have gotten bach to the manufacturer.

I'll pass on these - if the 'fix' causes more problems than the original problem it's not for me, get a bat it'll take care of the mosquitos and as long as you don't let it get your neck your fine :)

Thank you so much for the warning. Sometimes a cure makes the life worse than a help. You have provided good info in this article.

I got one of these and have only used it once. I'm like you and had read the cautions before buying it, but got it anyway. I laid it on the table beside me and didin't really notice if it worked that well or not. The refill that came with it is still good and I'm not certain that I'll get anymore. We'll see.

I avoid these types of products...itch...itch...scratch...scratch... At present, I look like I was a buffet for the little buggers with 47 teeth, but at least I didn't breath in the poison that was would have killed them and harmed me.

Yup..Don't think I'll be trying this product at all. Thank you for the article!

I agree with you and I had already decided not to try this product. At first, off clip on mosquito repellant seems perfect...no spraying chemicals on your skin...but, yes, I would like to not put myself at a risk greater than the mosquitos...lol. Good article.

Thanks for the warning. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

I had no idea about any of these warnings. Althought I don't use any of these types of repellants, it's good to know in case others around me are.

Good point and good info. Also I think the clip-ons are pretty big to be wearing, don't you?
