Off the Wall Beauty Tricks

Use Basic Ingredients the Next Time a Beauty Emergency Strikes

Max Stout
Sometimes we all need a break from product and want to rebel and explore our inner chemist, to be resourceful and creative. Homespun beauty treatments and tools have been around much longer than the current influx of beauty creams and devices that flood department and drugstore shelves. Every now and again it is wonderful to break it back down to basics. Here are a few fun, unusual alternatives to everyday styling and beauty needs.

The Egg White Mask

The egg white mask is not a new concept. It has been utilized for generations as an all natural way to fight acne inflammation and to tighten pores. You will need to separate your egg white and yolk. This is best done by cracking the egg into two clean halves and tipping the contents of the egg back and forth over a bowl. Make sure the entire yolk transfers from half to half while allowing bits of the white to drip into the bowl. I prefer to use a whisk to whip the egg white thoroughly before applying.

Pull your hair back with a ponytail or a headband. Apply the egg white to your face taking care not to drip any into your mouth or eyes. Let the egg white harden for 7-10 minutes then remove it with room temperature water.

The Old Salt in the Toothpaste Trick

To accelerate the drying out process of a pimple in an emergency situation, use a plain white toothpaste mixed with a bit of salt. The toothpaste will harden on your skin and the salt will help dry the pimple out. Use this when you need a quick fix only, as it can dry out the surrounding skin as well.

Baby Powder Substitutions

Dry shampoo is an extremely handy product, but it isn't always on hand. However, most households will have powder somewhere in the cabinet. Baby powder can be applied to your hair when a bit of oil cutting action is needed. Whether the oil is nature's own or the result of too much product, the baby powder will absorb it. Use the powder in moderation though as it can cause static, and it will need to be brushed through thoroughly. Oatmeal can also be used in a similar fashion, though it is a bit pricier to use in such a situation.

When a skin or hair emergency strikes, it is important to remember that basic household items can provide temporary relief when needed. Break out the weird and wacky side of your nature next time you need a quick beauty fix without a trip to the drug store!
