It's Odd but True - This Week Brings a New Collection of Weird and Wonderful News

Tony Payne
Like me are you a fan of Offbeat News?

"What is Offbeat News?" you might ask.

Offbeat news items are those events that make you realize that fact is stranger than fiction, the news stories that make you wonder how, why, what on earth were they thinking, and that's just amazing!

This is a selection of news items from the past week that had me laughing and bemused.

No Jail For Kisser Who Triggered Airport Scare

A man who caused 16,000 passengers to be delayed because he breached airport security to kiss his girlfriend has managed to avoid getting a jail sentence.

The man, who is a Chinese student, ducked under a security rope at New Jersey's Newark international Airport, to spend a final 20 minutes with his girlfriend.

The incident created a security alert and an airport lock down, resulting in the cancellation or delay of around 200 flights.

The number of times I wanted to do this when my girlfriend had to go back to the UK after a week with me in Florida... It's probably a good thing that I didn't, as it would have affected my Citizenship application, and we had enough trouble trying to get her a visa as it was.

Eleven Year Old Drove Mom's Car 80km (50miles)

An eleven year old boy is accused of taking his mother's car on a 80-kilometre joy ride in South Australia.

Allegedly, the boy took the car, from where his mother was visiting a friend last weekend.

Police are saying that they followed him after another driver reported a car being driven erratically outside of the city of Adelaide.

The boy has not sought bail in the Youth Court.

Oh boy - if I had dared to do anything like that when I was that age, would I have been in deep doo-doo!

New Zealand's Capital Is Calling Itself Wellywood

Wellington, which is the capital city of New Zealand, is going to have a Hollywood inspired sign standing 10 feet high across the hills of the peninsula that the city stands on.

The peninsula is home to a number of film companies, including the producers of Lord Of The Rings and Avatar.

The movie industry growth has meant good news for New Zealand since Peter Jackson filmed most of his Lord Of The Rings trilogy there.

Movie Trivia: My cousin's husband in New Zealand has a 5 minute acting role in Episode 5 of series 2 of Legend of The Seeker. Unfortunately the clip has now been pulled from You Tube so I can't direct you to it.

Snow Babe Gets A Cover Up Order

New Jersey police have ordered a sculpture made out of snow that is modeled after the famous nude Venus De Milo to be covered up after complaints from a neighbor.

Apparently some people had been stopping their cars and taking photographs, and the sculpture had received a lot of attention, but there is always one that wants to spoil the fun in every community isn't there.

The statue has now been covered up with a bikini.

I assume by the time I write this that Venus, if she is still around, isn't looking quite as good as she was. It's amazing how a bit of sunshine can damage a Snow Babe's figure...

New York Chef Creates Cheese Recipe Using Wife's Breast Milk

A chef from Manhattan posted a recipe on his blog for "My spouse's mommy milk cheese."

The chef and his wife are owners of a Brasserie. A photo on his blog shows the cheese, which is encrusted with maple caramelized pumpkin and Concord grapes.

It sounds weird doesn't it, but you never know, this might catch on. They could package the cheese in breast shaped containers, and sell it by the cup - "38 Double D of the Mommy Milk Cheese please"...

Drunken Woman Squirts Breast Milk On Jailer

A woman who was in jail in Kentucky for being drunk in public, was accused of assaulting a jailer by squirting breast milk at her. Apparently the woman was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication, but she squirted breast milk into the face of a female deputy while she was changing into an inmate uniform.

The article didn't say, but I wonder if she let the officer have it with both barrels...

Well that is just a taste (no reference to the breast milk) of what has been going on in the world in the last week. It's a crazy place that we live in isn't it. There is a saying in Yorkshire in the North of England, "there's nowt as queer as folk", and I think these articles prove the point.

Ahhh to have a penchant for the bizarre! Great article! My own tidbit for the week? The so-called "Jihad jane" is my neighbor, leaving just four blocks away. Tons of news media chaos all over the place!

That was pretty funny wasn't it. Shame they had to cover it up though.

I saw the snow sculpture on the news, after they dressed it with a bikini top and some draped cloth over the pelvic region. The details, like abdominal muscles, were incredible. Interesting article.

  • Tony Payne3/10/2010

You can say that again Vincent.

  • Vincent Summers3/10/2010
