Like me are you a fan of Offbeat News?

"What is Offbeat News?" you might ask.

Offbeat news items are those events that make you realize that fact is stranger than fiction, the news stories that make you wonder how, why, what on earth were they thinking, and that's just amazing! It's amazing just how many things happen in our modern world that are Odd But True or totally Bizarre.

This is a selection of news items from the past week that had me laughing and bemused.

 

SURFING ALPACA HITS THE WAVES

A surfer in Peru has spent ten years teaching dogs to surf on the front of his board, but now he has managed to get his pet Alpaca named Pisco (after a local liquor) up riding the waves as well.

The surfer has taught a lot of children, and has appeared in international competitions. He got his idea after seeing people in Australia surfing with Kangaroos and Koalas.

BLIND SOLDIER USES HIS TONGUE TO SEE

A British soldier who was injured in Iraq, has had revolutionary surgery to help him see with his tongue.

He has been fitted with a "brain-point" device that uses electrical impulses, which are sent to the tongue, which helps to create a mental image of the location based on the different sensations that the impulses give.

It definitely sounds like something for the April 1st collection doesn't it, but it just goes to show what miracles we can achieve today using technology.

BOOK STORE DEFENDS "CONTROL A WOMAN" TOY

The Borders book store in Melbourne, Australia, is trying to keep a product on the shelves after an irate woman took legal action against them for selling it.

The item in question looks like a television remote control, and has buttons such as Beer, Food and Sex. It also has buttons for Say Yes, Say No, Cook, Remove Clothes, Forgive, Forget etc.

Come on, it's just a toy... If they had a real one, it might come in handy for Tiger Woods don't you think, especially the last two buttons...

THIEVING BABOONS WIPE OUT VINEYARDS

Baboons in South Africa have apparently acquired a taste for Chardonnay grapes, and are eating the crops clean, which is having a big effect on the country's wine producing industry.

One grower alone lost 40% of his crop in the last week.

If the situation gets any worse, growers will be forced to take action to put a stop to this monkey business.

BANK WORKER TELLS ROBBER TO "GET LOST"

A bank teller in Hollywood, South Florida, refused to hand over any money when a robber walked in and handed them a note demanding money.

The would be robber was captured on surveillance cameras and later arrested.

SEXY MAIDS WILL CLEAN YOUR HOME - AND YOUR WALLET

A cleaning company in South Florida is offering "sexy maids" in costumes to clean your house. The cost is $60/hour, with supposedly "no touching" and "no additional services" offered.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I had someone like that come in to help clean my house, I would be wanting to do more than just let them get on with the cleaning.

    When I was a young teenager and we got our first TV with a remote my Dad always pointed it at my mother, telling us he was "turning her off." We laughed and laughed.
