Office Romance - to Do? or Taboo?

JingleDog
Office romance can be a touchy topic for many individuals and employers. Most consider it a huge no-no and professional faux pas. But, are there certain situations where engaging in personal relationships at your place of employment can be positive and acceptable? Let's consider the pros and cons.

If you work full-time, or more than one job, it can certainly be convenient to spend moments with your significant other at the workplace. Socializing during breaks and lunch hours, or even carpooling together, can provide some quality time while breaking up the monotony of the day; however, keep in mind that you are being paid to do a job, first and foremost, and having your partner so accessible can be a huge distraction.

Confidentiality becomes a concern, not only for the privacy of your relationship within office circles, but for your employer as well. This is why many businesses have established fraternization policies that outline expected and acceptable behavior between staff members. You should familiarize yourself very carefully with such policies before engaging in a workplace romance, as consequences of doing so can lead to serious offenses such as suspension or termination of employment.

Many dating couples find their 'personal business' becomes the subject of water cooler conversation among co-workers. While gossip is an inevitable component of an office environment, it can be demoralizing when your love life is the hot topic of discussion. Peers may treat you differently once they become aware of your involvement with another employee. Some will pry, or try offering advice - invited or not - while others may act less professionally towards you, even attempting to undermine your relationship.

Dating, like your career, requires continuous nurturing and development. Learning how to balance your emotions, actions and reactions, is critical to the success of either. For many, it can be a real challenge to separate between their personal and professional needs. A minor spat between loved ones can lead to a long day of stress if you have to navigate around each other but have little opportunity to communicate. And in more complicated situations, a romantic breakup can put a major strain on your career. Even if it's a mutual separation, where both parties handle it like adults, issues such as jealousy and resentment may arise, and other events - such as promotions, firings or newly formed relationships - can pose a threat to your job and mental stability.

So, how do you avoid the pitfalls of office dating yet still pursue a romance? Carefully weigh all of your options. Discuss the situation with your partner, away from the office. Establish relationship rules for yourselves and stick to them! Also, respect your employer's business policies. If you are unclear about what is permissible, talk to your human relations department or supervisor, and then act accordingly.
